Hi s/Lash (and La Bete) good to see more kiwi gamers here

and on a related note - have either of you been watching Matuku? (Thurs 9.30pm) and got any ideas...

Hi back y'all. No, I haven't paid Matuku much attention yet, but that's because I've been so darn busy with my webcomic and other TV backlogs and a gamer who just got back into town from Auckland and blablablah, I'll watch it this week. It certainly looks pretty flash for a local production, but I haven't the experience to back up my words yet...

you think that we could find a taniwha to stop the wellington bypass? must email people back home and ask them to look into this...

Frankly I'd be more worried about deep earth movements under Wellington. If they needed to club Maui's fish so hard around this region (hey, I like hills), it's pretty obvious that it was twitching pretty hard... what if it wants to twitch again?

A highway taniwha looks positively pedestrian beside that.

The requisite beating for punning may commence at your leisure.

Eternalknight, yeah it is tarn-e-fah. That isn't proper Maori but close enough to get away with.

Taniwha's come in all shapes and sizes, so the card won't be wrong.

Ah thanks for that. If memory serves, I think the card shows an aquatic serpentine creature of large size.

Loath as I am to comment on a Magic card, (I hope my Rolemaster players dont see this) that describtion is about right for the 'classic' view of a taniwha.

Just had a look at the Magic Card Here and that is not how I would envisage a Taniwha to be:) (but as I has been mentioned they come in a variety of shapes and can polymorph so- but that picture is just a standard Sea Serpent)

Ian Miller's taniwha illustration is a good sea serpent, but nothing screams 'taniwha' from it. I'd expect a proper illustration to have bigger/more sunken eyes and definitely a bigger tongue and generally just look more craggy and streamlined (if that makes sense). I'm no expert on Maori art, but that's the impression I've gotten.

After all this discussion, I want to mix the taniwha into my unpublished scifi universe now. I think that would be perfect for so many reasons, not just because it's a symbol of an ethnicity that's not French, Xrer, Baronial or Ankkheris...

actual depiction of taniwha varies wildly in art - an example is the carving used in the history of new zealand tv series (prof belich? - cant recall the name off the top of my head).

This carving is very serpentine, but the neck is open - more wormlike than a classic sea serpent. certain no unicorn horn.
