Swashbuckling/Seafaring campaigns?

Who here plays in any sort of swashbuckling/seafaring campaign?

Just a question I wanted to pose, as I myself am interested in swashbuckling campaigns, but regrettably don't play in one.

I would, if there is enough interest, consider DMing an online swashbuckling campaign...

While technically my campaign qualifies as Seafaring, the adventure is set beneath the surface of the sea. Thus you lose the traditional pirates and sailing ships, while gaining instead a realm of sea hags, sargassum swamps, and massive reefs filled with a plethora of marine life.

As for me I've played games in which ship adventures have occured (ie in which the ship the PCs are travelling on is attacked by Sea Serpents) and am currently running a Polynesian campaign (lots of ship-based atction (though not Swashbuckling per se))

The difficulty of Ship-based adventures imho is that they get repetitive and their isn't all that much to do. - Okay we've been attacked by Pirates, been attacked by sea serpents, been attacked by harpies, been attacked by Sahuagin, been attacked by the Ghost Ship, we've attacked the Spanish galleon- um now what

But seriously and for some ideas - remeber that Bucaneers made a lot of land based forays (eg raids on military fortresses), exploration of inland swamps (read Tim Powers 'On Stranger Tides - excellent book) and mysterious islands. You could go underwater too(per Aeolius and play FF X for ideas too.)

Neat! That's one already - and I haven't even posted in the IC Forum yet. I'll consider it even more now.

Yeah...the key is to make sure that not all adventures are "The ship has been attacked by...."-style adventures.

The Jonah template from Broadsides offers an excellent adventure hook - "I thought that guy drowned years ago! How did he survive! And why are Bad Things suddenly happening to us?" - for example.

And I saw a really excellent adventure somewhere online involving numerous shipwrecks and a sabotaged (haunted) lighthouse.

Count me in. That sounds like a cool idea. I've never played in any game thats had more than a modicum of seafaring.
 

I'd be in as well - I'd love to test out the parry rules that Dragon brought up. Took me 7 classes to get an effective swashbuckler before that. ;)

Other good adventure hooks could revolve around the islands you run into, and land on (for supplies, to avoid storms, because you got caught in the magical tides that lead to the slavers), the things you run across accidentally (did we just see an elven ship sink a dwarven trade frigate?), the underwater war you inadvertantly happen across (Sahugin vs. Sea Elves, and you're the wild cards) or more.
 


I might be interested too, depending on the logistics. I'll be the apprentice level deck swabber with three gray teeth that repeatedly stops his work, shakes his head, and chuckles beside himself at ominous times. Are you thinking message board, email, or chat?
 

I'm wanting to run a campaign in the Red Steel (aka Savage Coast) campaign setting. I've always loved the idea of playing a Lupin with a wheel-lock pistol. :D

I'd love the chance to play in a sailor campaign! I've been DM-ing a pirate campaign for the last couple of years and both my players and I agree it's been the most entertaining adventures we've had in years. Be advised though, that any information you find in the DM-guide on ships and sailing is absolute drivel!

To be quite honest, I'd love the chance to be in any campaign. The last few years I've only been a DM, not a player... I wanna play too! *whine* 'whimper*:(
