"Sweeping" enhancement - how does it work?

Reading the "Sweeping" enhancement from the Magic of Faerun I can't figure out the "+4 Str" bonus it infers when making a trip attack. Is it a normal +4 Str bonus (ie - add it to my Str score and use that Str bonus in my check) or is it added to the result of my check (ie - roll d20, add normal str bonus, then add 4). I know this should be simple, but i can't wrap my head around it. bah.

Re: thanks

Yep, a flat +4 to the check total. Great for canceling out a bit of size deficiency or the like. And any edge in tripping is huge since it's a straight-up, opposed Strength check (unlike grapple)

My monk has Bracers of Striking with this ability. He’s all about using his Great Throw, Karmic Stance and Defensive Throw feats from OA as much as possible. :)

I was planning on adding it to a psionic warriors weapon with the Stand Still and Knock down feats. I figure at worst i can trip them and stop them in their tracks in some way or another.
