Sword Domain

Another spell that is really good for a 6th or 7th lvl spot is holy sword. It is listed as a 4th lvl spell but if you notice the paladin (who is the only one to get the spell) doesn't get it till 14th or 15th lvl.

In Defenders of the Faith there were spells like Sword Stream and Knife (?) Stream. These are great spells for the domain list.

I created a similar domain for a group of clerics that worshipped "The Way of the Sword". Essentially they were clerics of a conceptual ideal as opposed to a deity.

The Domain Power was martial proficiency in all swords. No Focus, No Specialisation, just the ability to use all swords.

In addition, they were banned from taking the War domain due to its inherent violation of a focus on perfection. Yes they could cut a man down without blinking, but they never sought to do so.

Since I don't have my notes with me, some of this is from memory:

Spells included: magic weapon, greater magic weapon, weapon of the deity, blade barrier, sword stream, knife stream, and tensers transformation.

Flavour of this sect: they never used magical swords or buffs (spells or items) since it didn't make them truly "at one" with their blades.

Originally I wanted to make a prestige class based around the "best" of the sect. This would give them access to Weapon Specialisation and other "manga-like" abilities but never got around to it.

What, no True Strike ?! No Haste?! No Cat's Grace !? :(

I don't see any of those as being especially connected with swordplay. True Strike is the closest. It was on the list at one point, but I though something directly associated with the weapon was better. I was also trying to minimize the number of non-cleric spells on the list.

Cat's Grace, I don't get. That doesn't enhance the ability to use swords at all (excepting short swords and rapiers.)

Those stream spells might be promising, I'll have to look at them.

I think the Cat's Grace is based around AC bonus from a higher dex. While the True Strike is obviously the +20 to hit (and subsequent critical).

Apart from that I had a look at an NPC I created for a campaign who belonged to this group of clerics.

He had Sword of the Deity (Weapon of the Deity) as well. I had made notes for a 9th level domain spell granting Aspect of the Deity and Greater Aspect of the Deity from DoF. The "focus" to release the ultimate "perfection" of the art.

... basically, I've separeted the "personal combat" aspect out of War an called it Battle. War is now a mass-combat-centric Domain. Blades is all about expertise with a bladed weapon

That is a good idea (and some nice lists as well).

Thanks. I'm a conceptual purist. :)

Campbell: The spells marked with (DHE) are from my setting, the Demon-Haunted Earth. You can read all about it (and the spells) here:

PS: You can also see my re-work of all Core Domains there, and a bunch of new ones, too. The Domain spells are meant to be compatible with a spontaneous Domain converting Cleric, so you'll see far fewer Sor/Wiz spells (and those that remain are higher level).

Depends on your campaign. OA allows katanas to be Finessed in 3.0. Snd ed had a cleric of Elistraee carrying a katana. I believe it was in the FR Evermeet book (she had been the only drow to set foot on the island). The extra partial action from Haste exemplifies a great many aspects of sword play (mobility, fast attacks, etc). Even two handed sword techniques have combinations/feints/etc.
