Sword to Polarm

Naginatas don't normally detach. The blade is very similar to a sword's blade, and sometimes old swords were used to make new naginatas, but the attachment between blade and stick was intended to be permanent.

Anyway, if you wanted it to be a falchion rather than, say, a scimitar, then you should be looking at the Chinese guan dao rather than the naginata for your polearm uses.

It would still be a glaive in D&D terms.

Pretty much yeah. I would agree that if improvised, it would in fact be an improvised weapon. Naginata was the original thought but I wanted to use a Falchion instead of a crazy asian short sword. Assuming the weapon has been crafted, not improvised, would the composition of a falchion, contrasted with the composition of whatever weapon a Naginata detatches into, when attached to said stick, make the act of killing various mythical beast and humanoids any more complicated or impossible?

It wouldn't have the stats of a falchion, if that's what you're getting at. A falchion on a short stick would be a bardiche. A falchion on a long stick would be a Large glaive or a voulge.
