Swordmage class feature: SWORDBOND

It says,

As a standard action, you can call your bonded weapon to your hand from up to 10 squares away.

This is neither power or attack. And it only mention about the distance. Should a swordmage have either line of sight or line of effect to the sword? Can a swordmage retrieve his sword even if that sword is another one's hand, or in some container?

Also, Farbond Spellblade says,

If you have the Swordbond class feature, you can call this weapon to your hand from up to a mile away.

As a character rarely has LoS or LoE to something a mile away, I guess those two are not required. But not 100% sure.

How do you think about it?

I wouldn't require LOE or LOS. As long as the sword is within range I'd allow them to call it back. I see this funcitoning just like Aegis-Fang from the Drizzt novels. Wulfgar wielded this weapon and the only time I recall the weapon not being able to be retrived is when it was taken while he was unconscious and it was taken miles and miles away.

Both are very much No Line of Effect needed - remember that sword mages are all about teleports, anyway.

I think of that power as being similar to Return of the Jedi, when Luke air lifts his lightsabre from R2D2 and then hacks people to bits.

Farbond is even cooler - lets you walk into a place unarmed.... and then whack people to bits.

Our swordmage's arm was amputated. She can still wield her scimitar, and we are replacing her arm with a 'mundane' battlefist.

Is it possible for her to replace 'swordbond' with 'cyberarm' and use it as an implement? I know I'm free to fluff things, but does the RAW allow for non-sword weapons to synergize with swordmage class features?

By RAW, no. The text about implements is pretty clear what kind of weapons are allowed as implements. But as I said before in a thread about spear/hammer/axe mages I would allow it b/c it probably won't brake your game.

Another issue that crops up with RAW is that Swordmage Warding requires a blade. Implement feats don't cover you for class features.

Mechanically, this really isn't an unbalancing issue, as mentioned by another poster. Do what you want man, it's your game.

Thank you guys. I will just let a swordmage retrieve a sword, without LoS or LoE, and in whatever circumstance (say, held by another one) the sword is.

It is indeed an arcane character's ability, something supernatural. And that is a standard action, which is very precious in 4e games.
