Swordsage with trapfinding- what ability to remove?

shmoo2

First Post
I would like to provide the Swordsage with the rogue's Trapfinding ability and Search as a class skill.
Would removing one (or both?) of the Swordsage's current first level special abilities be acceptable as a trade off? Is removing either 'Quick to act' of 'discipline focus' a good trade for adding 'Trapfinding'?

If discipline focus is more powerful than trapfinding, perhaps it could be delayed one slot- i.e. weapon focus at 4th level, insightful strike at 8th, etc.

thanks!

Both quick to act and discipline focus are better than trapfinding + one class skill.

My suggestion is to multiclass. 1 or 2 levels of rogue will only loose you 1 initiator level. One could take the able learner feat if you really want to spend swordsage skill points into search.

That or just drop the one you want the least.

I'd give it to him for free. Being the trap-monkey sucks. Anyone who wants the job should be praised, not nerfed. :)

Addendum to the penguins latest wise words: Being the trap-monkey without evasion sucks even more.

If you don't have someone else in the group, give it to him for free. He'll need a lot of curing and will waste many skillpoints for search and disable device.

Yeah, same opinion. In my games, I've simply ignored the existence of trapfinding, and removed the need for it. Still, the roges do it, because they have the skills and evasion to pull that off, frequently.

Or, more often, they use poor summoned monsters - what else can you do with all these low-level spell slots?

Cheers, LT.

Why bother with Summoned Monsters? Get a wand of Unseen Servant (or cast it directly) and have it drag around a 100 pound bag of rocks (limit of the unseen servant's dragging weight). Then make sure the Wizard walks around with a Permanencied Arcane Sight. Unseen Servant with rocks triggers basically every mechanical trap, so that you can go around; Arcane Sight notices all magical traps not specifically set up to avoid that method.

Until 9th level, when he gets Evasion, and 18th, when he gets Improved Evasion.

err, I think it's 18th, too lazy to check tonight..

No one ever uses attack traps either. :(

My Iron Heroes game will have attack trap zones in place when my players least expect it. Namely, once they get out of the D&D mentality and embrace the IH way. :D
