Symbol spells

Has any player used the various Symbol spells?
Considering the cost (1,000 gp minimum) of this one shot spell and the limited effect (10 HD max for Sleep, 1d6 rounds for Stunning) it just doesn't seem a very viable spell.

In RHoD, my cleric put up multiple Symbols of Sleep around the besieged city at choke points, and then had elven defenders move in and coup-de-grace the sleeping attackers.

Expensive, but very effective against hordes of lower level attackers.
