Synergy Artifacts
Artifacts are an interesting conundrum in gaming. They are usually very powerful and well known, but seem difficult to use in a game. Artifacts are usually items of power that can disrupt the balance of a even a high level game. Low level games rarely get to experience the joy and mystery an artifact can bring to a campaign. Synergy Artifacts tries to bring the artifact to these lower level games.
Synergy Artifacts is a pdf book by The Le Games and written by Adam Briggs. The book comes is small zip file that is a bit over a meg in size. Inside there are three versions of the main book: A pdf to read on the computer screen, a pdf to print out and an rtf file of the book. The zip also contains a separate pdf that is a thirteen page preview one of their other books, pocket artifacts.
The art in the book is a mixed bag. The subject matter is appropriate for the artifacts being described but the styles of the pieces of art are rather varied. The art doe not flow from page to page with the different styles. The layout is basic two column and easy to read. There are no borders or extra decorations that make printing a problem. The bookmarks have all the artifacts marked and make them easy to go from one to another when using it from a computer.
There are plenty of artifacts in here and they are quite varied. The artifacts are designed for lower level characters to find and the power of the artifact grows with the character. There artifacts are also grouped together so that ones of similar types can gain power with the others. For instance there are the Cat Artifacts. There is a helm and pair of gloves called Cat’s Eye and Cat’s Claw. Individually they have magical abilities but when warn by the same person they get even better like greater bonuses and new powers.
Some of the artifacts might not need to be artifacts. There are some that can easily be created with the same powers under the magical item crafting rules. The histories of the artifacts also could have been expanded upon. There is a nice variety of items here and having then gain power as the character levels is a nice way of keeping the items on pace with the character. The synergy of items is a great way to get characters interested in side treks to quest after artifacts that will help out one they found.
