T1: The Village of Hommlet - why are the PCs there?

Like a lot of the older published adventures, the hook for the PC's was left for the DM to decide to suit the individual campaign.

That's so not true - especially of Gygax's adventures.

B2: You wish to become a hero, and such heroes head off to the Borderlands to test their mettle. So, off to the Keep!

EX1/2: You accidentally enter the realm.

G1-3: You have been assembled by noble rulers to stop the giant attacks. If you fail - the axe!

D1-3: see G1-3.

S1: No predetermined hook.

S3: Sent by important people in Geoff.

S4: Sent by agents of the Margrave of the March of Bissel.

T1: You come to Hommlet to discover if this is indeed a place for adventurers to make their fortunes. (Bandits have begun to ride the roads again; Hommlet worried to the Viscount; this information has been spread through the countryside and the news has attracted outsiders to the village again).

WG4: The gnomes of S4 send you.

WG5: I can't remember this one offhand - it's a predetermined start with Gary's PCs, though. Looking for adventure and excitement and really wild things, as I recall.

WG6: Summoned by Tenser to recover the Crook of Rao.

Certainly, many of the hooks are light and easily changed, but they're certainly present in most of Gygax's work.

The passage in question: "He and his minions have been careful to raid far from this area, never nearer than three or four leagues, travelling on foot or being carried in the wagons of the traders from Hommlet."

I didn't think it was correct for T1. I do remember a very specific detailed reason for the characters being there... but not having T1 at hand I wanted to wait till I could look at it.

Is there any other hobby that is so riddled with myths believed by those actually in the hobby? Myths that can be shown as false by merely looking at the material referenced.

the welcome wench serves the best ale for leagues around...
plus it has rooms available. the pcs have been travelling and need a place to rest not on the ground.

they have a few coins left in their pockets and felt like springing for a comfy bed.

they also need some provisions. and possible talk in the tavern might lead them to a tidy bit of profit adventuring.


it is left to the referee to give the pcs some hooks/rumors.
 


It's 30-odd years ago!!! You expect me to remember why we went to moathouse? .... I remember those bloody giant frogs though ... and large snake that took me down to zero HP. I also remember twking out two guards with two shots of my bow in a single round - at first level!

Anyways, the PCs are clearly there because their paladin had a dream that "something evil is afoot."

Although I always thought that evil was an abstract concept, not a body part.
