The main reason why I like hard shell tacos is because it makes the texture a little more interesting to me. This is especially true for someplace like Taco Bell, where the ingredients are basically all mush. If I'm making them at home I'll usually do a mixture of hard/soft, though I don't care as much since everything is fresher and more textured.
 

While I prefer a soft taco in general, a local family-owned chain called Seven Salsas makes the best damn hardshell tacos I've ever had.

In addition, the variant known as the Taco Salad can only be made with a hard, crunchy corn shell.
 

Yum, taco salad. Taco Time has an excellent taco salad (I enjoy the chicken most of all).

I will have to find a replacement in southeast Arizona.
 

Don't be afraid to look around, even in non-Mexican eateries. One of the best Taco Salads I ever found was in the student cafeteria at UT Law School.
 

I definitely dig the hard shell taco, assuming it's done correctly. The worst hard shell taco is the one with very bland meat and cheese (ground beef, salt and pepper only, with American style cheddar). I'm a gringo, I admit it, but I enjoy my tacos with some kick, damnit.

When having crisp shelled tacos at home for years I didn't realize crisp shells are much better when baked or nuked first.
 

Do not denigrate yourself, ghostly one! I've met many a gringo with tastebuds were made of asbestos.

My late friend Ted would typically consume a couple of cups of salsa at a meal...and that's not counting how much pico he ate as well.

Then there was the guy I watch at a Chinese restaurant I frequent: he was eating his meal dipping everything in hot oil, hot mustard, or both. Without a drink.
 

I tend to prefer hard shells. Something about the contrast of the shell to the meat and cheese inside. Of course a lot of the tacos we make at home are taco salads where we use tortilla chips that claim to be authentic. Comes out tasting pretty good.
 

To me, the ultimate taco is the Funkmeister at Moe's Southwestern Grill: pinto beans, meat*, cheese, and lettuce on a soft-shell taco...perfection.

*They have steak, chicken, ground beef, and catfish...I've only ever had the first three, and while the ground beef was pretty standard (nothing special), the chicken taco was the best chicken taco I've ever had in my life, and the steak taco was the best steak taco I've ever had in my life.
