Emperor Valerian
First Post
Those who play in my campaign (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!) should stop reading now, or risk spoilage...
Alright. As the finale combat of my next session in two days, my players and their party will end up fighting a relatively large and dangerous battle. The party as it will likely stand at the start of the engagement (the group is large, as party members persuaded people to come along, and/or people came with for plot purposes):
1 lvl 10 paladin
3 lvl 7 paladins
1 lvl 9 cleric
1 lvl 8/2 sorcerer/fighter
1 lvl 6/4 fighter/bondblade
1 lvl 5/5 rogue/bard
1 lvl 10 bard
1 adept3/wiz3
1 ftr6
They will be up against the following:
2 Fire Giants
1 Rgr4/Rog2
1 Rgr5/Rog5
1 Rgr1/Rog5
2 War4
2 War3
1 War5
The bad guys, in this case, are busy attacking a siabrie (see the Wizards of the Coast website... CR18) that is the father of one of the characters. He is badly wounded, and while he can help out, he will die without the PCs intervention. I am assuming after they see the fight happening (and the character in question will have a pretty good idea of who the siabrie is), that the party's paladins and the fighters will charge into melee, while the bards will fire arrows from afar and the spellcasters launch their fireballs and such of doom.
Now, how should the baddies respond? Right now I'm guessing at least one fire giant is going to keep pressing the siabrie, while the other leads the peons into a fight with the new foe. Should the fire giants have some nasty melee feats, such as great cleave and sunder, for example? According to a couple EL/CR programs online that I've run this through, the party, counting the Siabrey is around an effective 14th level... and the encounter is around 15th level...
I fully expect in this fight for there to be casualties... one or two would be nice from a DMs perspective.... so feel free to send nasty tactical suggestions.
