Taint Rules in Use?

Is anyone using the taint rules form Heroes of Horror/Unearthed Arcana in play? I am considering adding them into our game, but was wondering what the impressions of those who had used them were.

One of the neat things about the Taint mechanic is that it can easily be imported to an AD&D campaign, with little tweakage at all.

I use the taint mechanic as a localized effect, it only comes into play when one enters certain realms. It's much easier to remedy outside of those realms than it is within them. If there is one d20 Fantasy book, I really dig, it's Heroes of Horror. There's a pdf called Darkness and Dread that you may wanna look up, as well.

Darkness & Dread?

Is that the one from the LEgends & Lairs series? If so I have the hardcover around somewhere that I picked up off a used shelf at the lgs, but I havven't had a chance to read through beyond an initial skim when I got it.

Hi,

I've used them in my Freeport campaign. The PCs are currently on a quest to cure one character's mentor from the Shadowlands taint. They will do this by finding the Peach Tree of Immortality which lies on top of the mountain Path to Heaven.

Cheers

Sounds neat.

Another mechanic that is similiar to Taint that I like to import into my AD&D games is Chaosium's SAN stat. If one assigns percentage value in incrememnts of 5 to the table in the 1e DMG on insanity, you can add a great horror aspect. The DM rolls a d% and if he rolls under the Sanity score of the player, the player is affected for 1d10 days by the insanity type thier score corresponds with. As the SAN dwindles, the seizes of insanity become less frequent but far more severe in nature.
