Tainted Avalon - Post-Arthurian Avalon

Dude...cool story hour. Thanx for the compliments...

And now...Cultures of the Gnomes

On the slopes of the Tor and in the Elfinwoods, dwell another, even more reclusive breed of Fey - the Gnomes.

The Gnomes tend to be short and browned, with black, brown, red or green hair and black eyes. Their most noticeable feature is their noses, which tend to be large or mishapen in some way. They only stand about two or three feet tall at most. They live, like the Elves, in small clan groups, often dwelling in caves, though not so deep as the dwarves.

Gnomes are very close to the earth. They are even earth-colored, and a Gnomes standing still is very hard to see. They will generally make their homes in small, mound shaped homes built from heather, bracken, and earth, with grass growing over them, often called "Gnomeholes." They are almost always reclusive, but they are a merry folk among their own kind, loving music, good cheer, and good food. They are also mischievous and they delight in pranks, especially on gullible mortals. A favortie game of the gnomes is to outdo one another in practical jokes, though not jokes played on their own kind. Gnomes which get caught during their pranks often suffer under a lifetime stigma from their peers, and may even leave the clan in shame. The Gnomes revere the same Gods as the Elves, although they do not sing as sweetly. Gnomes have their own magic, and while the Elve's magic is enchantment, the Gnome's magic is illusion, and they are masters of it.

Like Elves, Gnomes are ageless, though, also like Elves, they can be slain. They, too, follow the Lady of the Lake, though only as a distant name to be revered. Unlike Elves, they are found all over
Avalon, and especially on the North Slope of the Tor and Bheac Mawr Coeden, in which there is a town named Gnomehole, for the prodigous amount of Gnomes that live there, and, too, the number of humans who live there in harmony with them.

The Gnomes, like the Elves, celebrate the Midsummer's night with festival and dance, though among the Gnomic Midsummer festivals, more emphasis is placed on good food and drink than music, and Gnomic festivals are so well hidden you could walk within ten paces of one and not see it, thanks to the Gnome's skill with illusions. Any mortal wandering by such a festival, of course, becomes fair game for any number of pranks and illusions just for the Gnomes amusement, and this practice has led many to label the Gnomes cruel and malicious.

GAME RULE INFO

Gnomes in Avalon are the same as the Gnomes presente in the Player's Handbook.

High Moor Hold & Caer Trehannis

High Moor Hold

Is one of the last...no, the last castle left anywhere on the Tor. The only fortress that escaped the destruction of the Ruinous Wars, its garrison has been swelled by many knights, descendants of those nobles who lost their holdings during the Wars. Perched on a rocky crag overlooking the Northern slope of the Tor, and looking toward the Pillars of the Sky, the grim, scarred fortress, like a battle weary veteran, thrusts the spears of many towers toward the sky. Aside from the ancient Abbey of St. Augustus on the crest of the Tor, and Caer Trehannis, in the Bay of Trehannis to the west, it is the only refuge in that whole area.

It was constructed by Lord Elwyn Inorien in 150 ARD, and it took 47 years to build. Through its illustrious history, it has weathered nearly 50 seiges. For 400 years, it has been the headquarters of the Order of the Golden Guard, and for 400 years, an Inorien has been the Preceptor of the Order, except for one notable occasion in 45 ART, when an ambitious commoner ascended to that position by virtue of skill at arms and a noble marriage.

The current Lord of High Moor Hold is Lord Sir Ignatius Inorien, although it seems his days are numbered. His son, Norman, is 20 years old and was knighted just the last year. High Moor Hold boasts a garrison of 6,000 foot-soldiers, including the yeomen of the area, and 3,000 Knights of the Golden Guard, in addition to 500 sappers (seige engineers) and 300 war machines. With its complement of 9,000 fighting men, it is the largest fighting force in Avalon, aside from the Wizard's Grey Hordes and the Sandriders of Allamid. The Watch of Caer Trehannis falls far behind, with only 1,000 foot-soldiers and virtually no cavalry.
