Taking 10 in a Skill Challenge

I was sure I read that you can't do this but I can't seem to find any reference to it.

With the general DC's of Skill Challenges that I've seen, taking 10 pretty much guarantees success. There's no reason to even do them. Is there something I'm missing?

A skill challenge is an encounter, if I recall correctly. You cannot take 10 in an encounter (PH, p. 179).

So, that's one way of finding out if a skill roll your DM suddenly asks you to roll is part of an hidden Skill Challenge.
