Taking 10 or 20 on checks

if your players dont care about roleplaying than just let them take 10 or 20. Personality i would of liked to try and pass the test on my own to enter the area.

It all depends on how your players like to play. If they hack-n-slash than dont bother them with trying to figure out how to clear their mind. Just let them take 10 or 20 and be done with it.

If they are more into roleplaying than let them figure it out the hard way. It could make for some interesting playing.
And how in the world would you do this, without a telepathic DM?

Great, from everyones responses it sounds like I did something somewhat legit although technically questionable. There were no dangers for failing the save, so taking 20 seemed like the best way to go.

I could have done a wisdom check, but I did a Will save so they could each benefit from being higher levels rather than just whoever put more points in Wisdom. For example, the fighter might not be very wise (low Wisdom), but he's experienced enough to have good mental focus when he needs it (higher Will save from gaining levels).

Roleplaying this type of thing is hard. They aren't just hack-n-slashers though. I wouldn't know how else to roleplay this other than how they did it. They just kept trying to assure me that they were praying and they'd start chanting the gods name and humming to show how their character was focusing on the task :) I think they handled it well.
