Taking the d20 Modern/Future Plunge!

Knightfall

World of Kulan DM
Ok, I've finally come around to the fact that I want to get into d20 Modern & d20 Future. Those two books are going to be the first ones I'm going to buy.

Now, what I'm looking for from all of you is recommendations on what the best d20 Modern products are out there. I'm pretty much sold on Ultramodern Firearms, from Green Ronin, and the d20 Menace Manual. I'm also looking forward to d20 Past.

But I'm not schooled in some of the more obscure d20 Modern books out there. Note that I'm not looking a campaign settings, as I've already started thinking about a homebrewed setting of my own. (Something I call Guardian Earth.)

Anyway, any and all help would be appreciated.

Cheers!

Pretty much anything D20 Modern by RPGObjects, or The Game Mechanics is going to be a solid purchase.

I agree. The Modern Players Companion, from Game Mechanics and Green Ronin, should be the first book on your 'must buy' list right after, or preferably with, Modern and Future. BTW, if you also want some optional rules to go with Modern, you can't go wrong with Grim Tales from Bad Axe Games. This is the book I now use roughly seventy percent of the time rather then the core Modern book

I am selling off my D20 Modern books after getting d20 Future. Part to focus on 3.5 and Confrontation and part because I personally was not that impressed by d20 Future (although many people are).

Check out the d20 Modern Resource List (sig below). There links to free equipment guides, sourcebooks and other extras. In addition to RPGO and TGM you can look at Dog House Rules for Sidewinder (since you mentioned Past). There is also a review forum here on EN world with all of these products reviewed. www.rpgnow.com will let you browse through hundreds of PDF products (and some print).

Options abound.

Good start. Menace Manual is one of the better official supplements, and after UMF, I felt Weapons Locker was pointless.

What's "obscure"? RPGObjects has a pretty good presence around here, as does the game mechanics.

The two non-core books I consider staples are:
Modern Players Companion (The Game Mechanics)
and
Blood & Fists (RPGObjects)

MPC has some stuff I don't care for (two words: class combos), but the material on starting packages is a lifesaver when it comes to getting a game off the ground. The rest (advanced classes, etc.) is merely nice.

Blood & Fists: The definitive take on martial arts in d20 modern.

Beyond that, it's more a matter of which elements you want to see in your game:
  • If you want to integrate D&D stuff, get Second World Sourcebook (Second World Simulations.)
  • Want lower key magic, check out Modern Magic (TGM/Green Ronin)
  • Want a screen? Green Ronin puts one out.
  • If you want a Navy SEALs/Rainbow Six or other military style campaign? Get Blood & Guts (and supplements). Note that I recommend this more for a military focussed campaign. I think that the level requirements of special ops might be a bit stiff if you only casually want to involve military elements.
  • Want to get away for D&D slot style psionics/magic? Try Green Ronin's Psychic's Handbook.

This book cannot be reccomended enough. Just remember to download the web enhancement with the corrected psychic advanced class.

I'd definitely go with The Game Mechanics' "Modern Player Companion" volumes 1 & 2, and RPG Objects' "Blood and..." line of products. Blood and Space is being revamped, though, so might want to wait, but go for the Blood and Guts set and Blood and Fists.

Other than those and the two core D20M+F books, my "must have" books are Ultamodern Firearms, Menace Manual, and the D20Modern setting, Darwin's World (post apocalyptic).
