Backstory

Currently unknown. But adventuring motivation: Adventuring will lead me to the answers I desperately seek.

The Adventure

The adventurers were each individually playing poker at the Tigerpaw Casino. They were joined by Silgre Silvertooth, an inveterate gambler with a huge unlucky streak. Suddenly the casino was overrun with large spiders. They teamed up to fight the spiders. Afterwards they were offered a bounty by Ariadne Sasaki to rid the casino and the town of the spiders.

The team ventured into the sewers where they fought with some even larger spiders. Eventually they found a very large spider who was mother to all the spiders over-running the town. They also found out that she kneaded the bread for the bakery above and her venom was used in the sourdough starter. They negotiated with the spider to leave town and go to the forest. Afterwards they confronted the baker and were paid off by him to be quiet about his use of the spider in his breads.

A few days later the newly formed team was hired by Kylana, a human mechanist who had heard of their exploits in Cardew. She needed their help in finding her solodron, Wingnut. She’d sent the solodron to Bellgrove to provide a water purifier to the mycolids living there. When the party arrives at Hulgig (a city next to Bellgrove), they are attacked by humanoids who are affected by a fungal infection. The team goes to the local goods story. When they don’t get the information they need there, they go to the largest building in town where the head of the town, a gnome druid, directs them to the caverns. The team suspects the mycolids may be to blame and the gnome shares their conclusions.

In the caverns they save a human named Dusstan who got caught in a rope trap that saved him from the sporeborn by suspending him at the top of the cavern. Eventually they save Wingnut from some quasits, but never find out which magic user had summoned them. Afterwards they go to the mycolids and find out that their leader has secluded himself because he’s also sick. They suspect that the water has been poisoned.

The party descends to the lowest level of the cavern and builds a raft to float to where the spore lord was. They give him purified water and he gets better. The adventurers then return Wingnut to Kylana and are rewarded and congratulated for their efforts.

Session 2

The Adventure

The adventurers had been working with Kylana for the past month to try and figure out how the mycaloid water source was poisoned. A gnome arrived with a wedding invitation for Ariana from her college friend, a gnome named Favienne Northcord. The wedding is in a town called Moonbright. It’s far enough away that they decide they will take a scrawler to get to the town.

As they are waiting at the ticket booth to purchase a ride on the scrawler, two dwarves show up looking beaten up. They tell the townsfolk that there are some goblins attacking all wagons headed into the town. The mayor tells the adventurers that if they help eradicate the goblins, their tickets on the scrawler will be covered. The team agrees to deal with the goblins.

They head a few miles out of town and find an overturned wagon half-surrounded by a fetid moat. They try to lift the wagon and are attacked. They begin to counter-attack and Jackal is accidentally hit by a magic attack by Ariana. Eventually the wagon is set on fire and the goblins retreat below ground. After a quick search that nets Jackal some money, they head down the stairs.

Underground Jackal is a bit reckless journeying through the tunnels and ends up triggering a trap. A fight ensues and the party kills one of the goblins. This scares their leader, Dib, who runs away and commands the remaining goblins to deal with the adventurers. After a bit more fighting, Jackal and Ariana fall unconscious. The remaining goblins use this as a chance to retreat to the rendezvous point with their leader. They know they won’t be followed since Appaluna has to stabilize her companions. Jackal searches the room and finds some gold hidden in a cobbled-together throne.

The adventurers return to the town and get their passage paid. Other than the team, the others on the scrawler are:

  • Silgre - who they last saw at the Tigerpaw Casino.
  • Hakoth Squabblesnap - This elderly orc holds an elaborately carved walking stick and loves to tell stories of their past. Headed to a tavern in Moonbright.
  • Halfling siblings - Yara and Ella Lightfoot - constantly bickering. They just want to feel the wind in their hair.
  • The operator: dwarf named Kildrak blackanvil
Jackal eventually gets tired of the halflings bickering and intimidates them into quieting. The scrawler is making its way to Moonbright as the adventure ends.

Sessions 3 and 4

The Adventure

The team arrived at Moonlight where the scrawler dropped them off in the middle of town. The old orc and Silgre both also got off the Scrawler. After a brief conversation, the adventurers decided to go to the mayor’s house first. There they were hired to rid the town of kobolds. They agreed on a payment of 25GP per person and 3 nights room and board paid at the tavern.

They head east and pass by Chana Petir’s farmstead. The halfling asks the party to help her rebuild her fence. In exchange she feeds them dumplings in cabbage broth. After that they head into the woods and come across four kobolds sleeping in a clearing near a fifth, dead kobold. They investigate the corpse and find out it’s suffering from scalemolder.

After a bit more time, they find the clearing with the kobold encampment. Because Ariana knows many languages, she’s able to speak directly to them in draconic. The kobolds are awed that a human can speak draconic. They do still direct the party towards Cliff. After some convincing, he takes them to see the Chief. The party hears about the issues with the kobolds and agrees to help.

On their way back to town they pass by another farmstead. Ariana helps them realize they need to do crop rotation to help their crops grow. They arrive back at the tavern. THey pay a merchant for information on how to get to the mill. Appaluna asks about the Mill brothers. When Jackal goes to sleep Ariana tries to prank him, but he’s a light sleeper.

The next day the adventurers head to the mill after breakfast. They are able to find the right tree and get 5 gallons of the sap needed to cure the Kobolds. Ariana gets the special ring from the Kobolds. The next day they go to the market to look for weapons, but there are not any weapons merchants available. They go to the mill, but the brothers refuse to talk to them.

In the morning, as the team is eating breakfast, Ebril tells them that her fiance hasn’t returned and Bartos (woodcutter foreman) is being evasive. Team agrees to see what’s going on. Jacks is rough with Bartos, but he doesn’t have to be as Bartos is happy to provide information. The team investigates the woods and finds the woodsmen around a tree. Jackal tries to shake them awake, but they are in an enchanted sleep. After fighting the sprites that were trying to protect Mossbeard the treant, they parley with him. The team convinces the woodcutters to agree to plant new trees for each tree they cut down and Mossbeard approves. Unfortunately, Bartos (Ebril’s fiance) wasn’t there.

The team returns to town and goes shopping. Thanks to their warnings they are able to save 3 people from falling into the river when a barge crashes into the docks. They quickly save the 3 other folks who did happen to fall in. They investigate the barge, finding all kinds of strangeness, including melted cages. The Mayor asks them to investigate and find the crew of the barge. The team investigates a nearby enchanted woods. There they are attacked by rats who are intimidated by Jackal yelling at them. They are then chased by Mastiffs and psychically attacked by ravens. Eventually they make it to the sacred stone area where the crew is tied up and Appeluna has a surreal conversation with the Green Hag there in an attempt to figure out what is needed to save the crew without tipping her hand. She agrees to find the hell hounds the crew was transporting. Appeluna reunites with the team and they are able to find ⅔ of the hounds. The Green Hag agrees to release the crew if the captain is taken into justice. The crew is delivered to the mayor and the mayor agrees to send the caption to the nearest large town to face justice.

The team is finally found by Favienne who is worried because her parents haven’t been seen recently and are missing marriage preparations. The team traces things back to the Mill and finds out that the brothers are doppelgangers. They fight them, win, and find Favienne’s parents. They then have to deal with a zombie attack on the town. In the first group of zombies, they realize that one of the supposed zombies is just a human pretending to be a zombie so as not to be attacked. They save him and find out it’s Bartos. Jackal takes Bartos to see Ebril. Eventually the team ends up at the tavern and fight alongside bartender/owner Portro who is a retired adventurer. Finally, they fight a necrophage and save the town.

They FINALLY attend Favienne’s wedding. They are also invited to Ebril and Bartos’ wedding. As they wonder about what to do, Appeluna’s patron appears to her and urges her to investigate why the barge captain was transporting hell hounds to Nargoth. The team decides to head in that direction.

Session 5

The Adventure

The team’s boat arrives at Wollerton. As they arrive, they hear the sounds of a brawl at the local bar. After someone is thrown out the window, the adventurers attempt to calm the bar brawl. There’s also a halfling with a sign yelling that the end is nigh. The party tries calmly asking people to stop, but the humans and dwarves do not listen. A mastic that belongs to one of the brawlers ends up biting Jackal. Eventually they end up dragged into the fight. A human and dwarf attempt to head butt each other and knock each other out. Eventually Appeluna ends the fight by casting sleep on the brawlers.

Niva, the bartender, thanks the PCs and tells them that these two families don’t have love lost between them, but have never come to blows before. Niva shoves the halfling off the bar and kicks him out. Then she wakes up Lanter and the dwarf explains that the miller told him that Rodwin had killed his prized ewe. Jackal slaps Rodwin awake. He explains that the village priest told him that Lanter burned down his barn. The party asks them if they are sure it was the other person or if someone could be tricking them. Each one is a little ashamed they didn’t try to ascertain the truth. They gather their families and leave. The party wonders if they’re once again dealing with doppelgangers.

The party went to speak to the miller. They question her and find out that she hasn’t spoken with anyone from the brawl and also that there was someone with spiky black hair and no facial hair who was spying on her. They speak to the elf priestess and hear a similar tale.

The team then goes back to speak with the family heads to relate what they learned and to ask if they’ve seen anyone strange in town.

As evening arrives, they speak with the innkeeper and learn about the cottage that’s been abandoned for 6 years and yet has had lights in the windows for the past 3 nights. They decide to stay the night to rest up.

The next day they go to the cottage. The door is barred and Jackal is unable to break it open. Jackal breaks into the window and they see the cultists. Hector insists they are escapees from a wyvern in Reedthorp. They see through the ruse because Hector has spiky black hair. Eventually things devolve into a fight. Three of the cultists gave up as they were failing the fight (getting very low on HP). Appeluna makes these 3 sleep. The team knocks out Hector and tie him up. They interrogate him and find out about the hideout and get a map of the valley with the hideout and wyvern cavern marked up. When they search the house they find gold, a hat of disguise (which Hector had been using), amulets with the symbol of the Servants of Nidhogg. They bring the cultists back to the inn. The bartender agrees to keep them arrested in the cellar and reaches out to the local baron. He offers them 100 gp each and a plot of farmland if they investigate the cult site. Before heading out, Appeluna asks the bartender about the hell hounds. He doesn’t know anything about hellhounds, but knows that mentions the Learned CIrcle of Enlightenment was awaiting some sort of shipment and that their leader is Maretta Cyneburg.

The team heads out into the valley. They pass a farm and come across a Shepherd who tells them that Maretta was headed in the same direction yesterday. After another day of travel they arrive in Reedhthorp. Ariana finds the survivors and Appeluna convinces them to tell their story. They talk about how a halfling showed up talking about how the end was nigh and then all hell broke loose. They were also attacked by Lambsbane, a wyvern who has been eating their sheep.

Jackal convinces the group to head to Lambsbane’s lair to kill the Wyvern. They all climb up without trouble. His lair is empty so the team explores. Jackal and Ariana climb up and find his hoard. Ariana also finds the secret entrance to the cult lair marked on a map at Lambsbane’s cave. They wait for him to arrive to fight him since they promised the villagers to fight him. They launch a surprise attack when he arrives, with Jackal and Ariana jumping on his back to attack him. He tries a few times to get them off his back, but they continue to hold on. In his frustration, he takes to the air with Jackal and Ariana on his back. The team does incredibly, but with the wyvern nearly mortally wounded, he gets a few lucky attacks on Jackal and Arianna and they end up unstable and fall off the wyvern. He flies off to lick his wounds (literally). Appeluna, who had been fighting safely from inside the cave, stabilizes the others and they stumble into Reedthorp where people there help them recuperate. It takes 3 days to get back up to health.

Afterwards they head to the Hidden Tomb, climb up the mountain, and go into the hidden entrance. They end up in a stairwell. From there they go into the robe room. Appeluna wears purple robes (disciples), Arianna and Jackal wear grey robes (novices). They leave that room into the main room and meet some Servants of Nidhogg. From there they are guided to the novice dorms. At the dorms they speak with Gratiosa Featherby and Appeluna recognizes her, but doesn’t reveal herself. She speaks with the other novices there to try and free Gratiosa, but it turns out they are part of Maretta’s group. They take them to the scriptorium where the team has to copy pamphlets for 5 hours. In that time, the members of the Circle of Englightenment figure they can trust our heroes and take them to the library to meet with Maretta. Maretta confides in them that she wants to disrupt the ritual because she doesn’t want the world to end. She gets her crew member to distract the librarian and Maretta takes them to the lower level of the library. There they learn how to disrupt the ritual. Maretta takes some books and flies out. The team goes into a few empty rooms, but eventually they stumble into the room where the ritual is taking place. They stop the ritual by destroying the bone of the void saint.

The battle is going poorly until they free the sacrificial person who helps them get things disrupted to the point where they can escape. On the way out they see Gratiosa again and she tells Appeluna that her sister Oranegterra was also kidnapped by the void cultists and taken elsewhere. After they get out, Appeluna’s patron tells her that it was good that they helped stop the end of the world, but Maretta was lying about who she was. She actually belongs to a cult that serves the arch-devil Parzelon, the King of Secrets, and a rival of her patron.

Session 6

The Adventure

The team took a week in Wollerton to recover from their efforts to free the area from the machinations of the Servants of Nidhogg. The local Baron gave them each 100GP and a plot of farmland. At first they thought to set up a base in Wollerton, but it was deemed too remote. They decided to lease the farmland for a rent of 10cp per month. Gratiosa’s parents also sent them a reward of 600GP for freeing her and also said they would put in a good word with Appeluna’s parents.

As the adventurers sat in the tavern debating their next steps, a Kobold came in and asked for their help at his master’s tower.

On the way to the tower, the kobold introduces himself as Windicul and explains that while his master, a dragonborn sorcerer was away, he thought to cast some spells to do his chores for him. Things went awry and he needed the adventurers to help him. As they arrived, they saw that many of the workforce around the tower’s lands were kobolds.

When they entered the tower they saw that Windicul had animated a broom to clean the room for him and a rug to beat itself. Ariana set the broom on fire, but then it was just a wandering inferno. Jackal thought it would be better to chop it in half, but then it became 2 smaller brooms and the second half of the broom attacked Ariana. Eventually, they dealt with the animated objects.

When the team headed upstairs they saw a terracotta soldier near the door. Jackal shoved the soldier and it woke up, saying “intruder”. The adventurers fought the soldier for a bit before Windicul remembered the resistances protecting the soldier. Once they shattered the soldier they found the door magically locked.

The adventurers triggered the riddle that would open the door and Appaluna solved the riddle. Now in possession of the key, the team entered the sorcerer’s chambers. There they found that another broom that Windicul animated has cleaned the chalk circle holding in a demon.

They split their attacks between the broom and the demon. Appaluna attempted to grapple the broom to stop it, but it wrestled itself out of her hands. She turned her attention towards the demon and attacked it along with Ariana. Jackal captured the broom and threw it out the window. Although the ladies were able to weaken the demon, it knocked them unconscious while Jackal was dealing with the broom. Jackal then dealt the killing blow on the demon.

As the team catches their breath, the sorcerer appears. Eventually he makes his way upstairs and hears Windicul’s story of what happened. Appreciative of the help provided by the adventures, he gave them some magical gifts. Appeluna ended up with a grey back of tricks and Ariana got a Ring of the Ram. Jackal declined a gift and received gold instead. He also asked them to please deliver a package to a colleague at the magical university at Zobeck. They were told not to open the package.

Before leaving, Appeluna asked the sorcerer if he had heard about the Servants of Nighogg. He did not have any more information than the adventurers did, but advised them to check with the university at Zobeck.

The team decided to head to Appeluna’s hometown of Reywald on the way to Zobeck.

Session 7

The Adventure

Before the group sets out Appeluna’s patron tells her that she’s doing a good job and grants her access to more power (meta: attains lvl 6).

It’s a 3 day journey to Reywald. The first two days and nights were uneventful. On the third night Ariana’s on watch. She falls asleep for a second and when she awakens just a few minutes later the package from Aalthic Bellin, the sorcerer, is stolen. She wakes up the rest of the party and tells them what happened.

Ariana leads the chase and is able to track the thieves to a clearing. There she sees a Dhampir standing near a kobold holding the box. Silently Ariana and Appeluna stealthily hide. Jackal charges into the clearing and scoops up the kobold.

The Dhampir decides to fight. Jackal throws the kobold at him and the thieves decided to run away from these crazy adventurers. Appeluna investigates and finds their membership card to the thieves’ guild of Reywald.

The next day as they walk through the town Appeluna keeps feeling like someone is following her, but doesn’t see anyone when she looks. First head to the Amorers. There a gnome named Felix Hexenburg greets the party. Ariana wants to buy mail, so he has his apprentice named Klaus do the fittings for Ariana. In 3 days Ariana’s Scale mail will be ready.

The group heads to the Oaken Inn next. It’s run by a dwarf named Mario Lightfoot. They eat fried cheese logs, egg noodles with meat sauce, and fried fish.

As they are eating someone comes with a cloak obscuring their face, looking furtively. When she reaches the table, it turns out to be Tonya, one of the servants from Appeluna’s family estates. Appeluna asks her to take her to see her family after dinner. They are taken to Appeluna’s father’s office. Her mother is more reasonable, asking her to save her sister, Orangeterra. Her father is still scandalized by her gaining patronage from demonic forces and stalks out angrily. Appeluna and her mother continue their discussion. Her mother suggests speaking with Bananastella who has become a cleric at the church of Yarila and Porevit. Upon questioning, her mother reveals that Orangeterra was kidnapped from the marketplace.

Appeluna goes to The Twinned Cathedral and is told to come back at dusk.

As Arianna is walking about the city someone attempts to attack her, but she is prepared for the attack and kicks him in the groin.

Jackal hasn’t gone out with the other two. He was sitting in the room they got at the inn when he is shot by a blow dart tipped with a sedative.

Apppeluna goes to Odengers. Appeluna asks the proprietor about Orangeterra’s kidnapping. She describes her sister as having brown hair with an orange streak in her hair. The owner recalls there was a vampire that entered the store on that day.

When the focus returns to Arianna’s fight, she knocks him out and carries him to the inn. She says it’s her friend who had too much to drink to deceives the guards.

Jackal wakes up tied to a chair with his snout tied shut. The kobold and Dhampir from the clearing are standing in front of him. The kobold is trying to unlock the box as Jackal tries to escape. Dhampir opens the box and light emanates from the inside. Suddenly the Dhampir grows old and dies as if the life was sucked out of him. The kobold freaks out, unties Jackal, apologizes, and escapes through a small exit sized just right for a kobold.

Ariana gets to the inn and throws the guy onto bed without restraining him. The guy wakes up and jumps out the window. Ariana runs down the stairs in pursuit and Mario is going upstairs and they get into conversation about the noise he heard upstairs.

Jackal comes upstairs from where he had been tied up and starts talking to first person he sees in the library to tell them he had been kidnapped and taken to the library’s basementcomes.

Appeluna goes back to the church. Bananastella, blond, is waiting for Appeluna. Appeluna tells her about the Servants of Nighogg. Bananastella tells her to go to Zobeck to ask about the cult at the church of Rava.

The team regroups at the inn and talks about their how their days went. They order flat noodles in a layers with meat and cheese, fish, and bread with sauce and cheese on top.

Ariana dreams of her mother wearing a necklace consisting of a key with a symbol of a spider. She shouldn’t be able to have this memory as she was a baby when it happened.

Day 2 in Reywald - Jackal patrols through town looking for kobolds; Ariana stays in the inn guarding the chest. Appaluna goes to childhood home and syncs with mom on what she learned in the evening.

Day 3 - Ariana picks up her armor. On the way out of town they see an airship and take up an offer to work on the airship in exchange for free passage to Zobeck.

Session 8

Narrative

The party has agreed to work on a dwarven airship in exchange for free passage to Zobeck. Razzit Greyborn (captain) shows them around and shows them where bunks are and introduces them to the crew. The night shift is currently sleeping in the bunks. One of those asleep is a tiefling. The adventurers are helping out by filling in so that the crew can work in shifts.

At the navigation area, Appaluna helps them fly through misty conditions and they just barely miss a mountain.

Ariana works on making a salad. She notices Thrardaed Ashbane acting weird. Ariana calls for security and Jackal comes and realizes Ashbane has poisoned the soup. Ashbane attacks because he is a fundamentalist who is mad the dwarves are trading with elves. Ariana and Jackal knock him out. After cooking up a new batch of soup, Ariana gives food to Appaluna and they go over what happened.

Assirlum Coalbreaker relieves Jackal for security. Aradius (the tiefling) relieves Appaluna.

Ariana’s dream: hears parents say “I hope one day our daughter becomes a leaf druid”.

In the middle of the night everyone falls out of bed due to turbulence. They investigate a noise and the ship’s cat jumps out of the shadows. Ariana casts Speak with Animals. She asks the cat if it’s the source of the noises. It says to head towards the smoke and scrambles away. When the team investigates, there’s a fire cat in the hold setting things on fire.

Appaluna gets to the wheelhouse. She finds Aradius slumped over the navigation table. The captain is bleeding from an arrow wound. Appeluna investigates and finds a metal toy. Turns out it’s a flitkith and it tries to stab her.

Meanwhile Ariana and Jackal fight with the fire cat. The fire cat attacks with a smoky yowl and neither one is affected.

Appeluna puts the flitkith in a glass goblet and puts her hand over it so that he can’t get out.

Ariana kills the cat and Appeluna locks the flitkith in the trunk in her room.

When they return to the wheelhouse, Aradiaus is awake; he wasn’t dead, he was just knocked out. Ariana heals the captain’s wounds.

Appaluna interrogates the flitkith and finds out he was hired to bring down the ship and brought the firecat. He doesn’t know who his ultimate employer was as he always met with a go-between. Appeluna agrees not to turn him in to the ship’s captain and he decides to make her into an ally.

They land in a field in the north of Zobeck.

“Unlike Reywald, the city from which you departed 2 days ago, Zobeck is a cosmopolitan city. In an inversion from the Duchy of Dornig you seem to see every type of creature EXCEPT for Elves. Before you is a busy city full of humans, kobolds, ravenfolk, ratfolk, dwarves, dragonborn, and even aasimar and tieflings.”

As they cross the bridge they meet a gearforged who explains the rules of the city.

The team tries to complete their task and deliver the box from the sorcerer. As they approach the gates to the university, a gearforged tells them to come back in two weeks for the recipient, Mage Orlando, is not currently at the university.

Session 9

Gameplay

In the 2 weeks that have passed, Appaluna did research trying to find a lead on her quest to find the Servants of Nidhogg and how to rescue her sister. She learned she should go to the temple of the Goddess Rava, patron of Zobeck.

The team entered the university and made their way to Orlando’s study. Orlando was working on a gearforged body. They delivered the box which had a special brain gear for gearforged. They mentioned what happened to the thieves who tried to open the box before. Orlando explained that the effect on the box was a security mechanism that Aalthic (socerer that gave them the box) uses to make sure no one can open his packages.

As the team left the university grounds, Black Eye the Kobold offered to take them on his ride to Rava’s Temple. The ladies decided to ride and he started driving them to Rava’s temple. The ride ended up in a traffic jam and vendors arrived to try and sell them stuff. When the ladies arrive at Rava’s temple Jackal is already there. (Perhaps Black Eye didn’t take the most direct route)

Appaluna spoke to a priest in the Hall of the Patroness and told them about the Servants of Nighogg and her sister being abducted. The priest asked them to remain for a moment and returned with Lena Ravovik, head human priestess. She invited them to her sanctum. After hearing that the group helped clear out the Temple of Nargoth, she offered to open a portal to The Labyrinth, where the quest can continue, but doesn’t have a key to open up a portal. She mentioned checking with other religions. Ariana remembered her dreams about being given a key and they left to find the nuns of the church of Sabateus.

A feral hunter attacked them as they left because she hates bestkins like Jackal. As the fight progressed, a kobold swiftblade tried to rob Jackal, but he was caught as he tried to get Jackal’s money. Jackal threw the kobold at the huntress. She was quite bloodied by this point and made her escape. The kobold escaped into the sewers.

The team headed outside of the city and found the tent serving as the current local temple to Sabateus. Ariana asked about the orphanage and Appaluna helped clarify that they were looking for a key that she may have had when she was dropped off at the orphanage. After performing a ritual, the priest was able to retrieve her key from a bag of holding.

Session 10

Gameplay

Now that Ariana has her parents’ key, the team returns to Rava’s temple and is escorted to the high priestess’ chambers. The high priestess introduces them to Griff the mechanist who examines the key. Unfortunately the key is spent, but the team is in luck as he explains he just made a new key to The Smithy yesterday. Griff explains that he is in a secretive organization called the Keeper of the Keys which is allied with the church of Rava. He puts his new key itno the air to open a portal.

After everyone enters the portal, they are surrounded by squirrels who attack and push Griff out of the portal as he yells about betrayal. A fight ensues. The squirrel priest is just about to die as he casts a portal under the girls and the other squirrels (Ratatosks) throw Jackal, who is almost dead, into the portal

The adventurers fall to the ground and wake a few hours later, realizing they are in a clearing. Jackal climbs a tree to see where to go. He spots a village and they head in that direction

They see a lady selling hot pies and ask someone where they are. They are in the Tumbledowns. (meta: another D&D game we play from the dndadventure club setting)

They meet another set of adventurers - Sasha, Grumpy. And Triss. (meta: the characters the play as in the dndadventure club setting) They discuss their situation a bit and mention being from another dimension.

One of the local adventurers suggested speaking with Baba Yaga. On the way to Baba’s house, they have to fight a Lillium and 2 awakened trees.

Once the team of six arrives at her house, Baba Yaga gives them healing tea. Ariana explains what’s happening. Baba Yaga opens a portal into another world.

The team enters the portal and they land on a ship in Greenwold. (meta: It’s Captain Catapult’s ship)

Session 11

Gameplay

The adventurers had landed on a ship when they fell out of a portal. Captain Catapult interrogated them about where they came from and what they wanted to do. The team is able to convince him that they are from another world and need help getting back. Captain Catapult knows a powerful priest who has happened to have given him a letter to summon his friends (meta: the characters from the Dungeon in a Box campaign). The captain says she doesn’t know what they look like, only their reputation so he gives them the letter and sails them to the town of Bloom.

They arrive to find the town in lock down. No one is allowed in or out, but with the letter from the priestess, Leeza, they are able to get into the town. From there they make their way to Leeza’s manor. The door is forced open and no one comes when they knock. They enter with trepidation.

When they reach the study, they are attacked by 4 infernal zombies. They fight the zombies and investigate. They realize that 2 of the zombies were recently deceased and have a brooch from the order that Leeza belongs to. More investigations in the manor lead them to footprints and knowledge that a journal is missing.

The town guard arrives because of the sounds of fighting. Things look suspicious, so they take the team to see the mayor. Ariana is able to convince the mayor they are there to help Leeza and are investigating. The mayor needs their help and allows them to go free, but maintains that they are not to leave the town until the murders are solved.

They go to the graveyard and find sigils on tombstones and graves that were dug from within - the zombies were resurrected and dug their way out.

From there they go to temple and convince the priest (a bullywug) to give them any information that might help. He tells them about a failed exorcism 30 years ago that led to the man’s death. Leeze was a neophyte at the time that she performed the exorcism and beats herself up for messing up and, therefore, being the cause of the death. The bullywug also confirms that the symbol they found at the grave site is the symbol of the fiend that was being exorcised.

The group decides to visit the archives. On the way there they see a suspicious character and chase them. It turns out to be a banshee that they fight.

They go to the archivist and Jackal is worried maybe the archivist isn’t who he says he is so he has Appaluna cast detect magic - there is no magic transforming the archivist. The archivist finds and hands them a newspaper article about the exorcism. They learn that the man who died had a child.

They visit the orphanage where the child was raised and Appaluna concludes that he is trying to get revenge for his father’s death and might also be possessed by the same demon.

They go back to the graveyard and investigate headstones and find a masonic crypt (the deceased father was a mason). Ariana investigates and finds out the door has recently been opened and that there was blood that has been cleaned off the crypt.

Jackal decides to break down the crypt door. This attracts some zombies and spectors so they fight those while Jackal continues to try and break the door. They find the child inside (now grown) and Leeza about to be sacrificed. In a series of lucky moves they kill him in one round. The ghosts of father and son are reunited and the fiend’s ritual is not completed.

The group asks Leeza to make a portal so they can get back to where they need to go. She spends a few days studying them to figure out where to send them to. She opens a portal and they end up just outside a city in the Labyrinth.

Session 12

Gameplay

Grif the Kobold from the Keeper of the Keys meets the adventures as they cross a bridge into The Smithy. He expresses happiness that they found their way to The Smithy after the attack. They give him a summary of what they did. Eventually Griff tells them he will take them to meet Kontak Tekar (head kobold mechanist of the Keepers of the Keys) to repair Ariana’s key.

As they walk around they see steam and multicolored smoke bellowing out of various workshops. They head towards the hill at the middle of the city where the Citadel of the Keys is situated. As they walk to the citadel they see mechadron caravans and celestials bargaining with fey over goods.

Archmage Alana (human) has her villa at the citadel. As the team arrives, they see an ancient brass dragon landing on a tall tower within her villa.

Kontak’s workshop has tons of kobolds, gearforged, and dwarves working on creating tools and arcane weapons as well as keys. Ariana can understand draconic so she hears them cursing as they drop various things while working. Kontak meets with the party and agrees to fix the key. Advises them to visit the marketplace and get kitted up.

They first head into an Item shop run by purple Tiefling with a black cat familiar. Someone shows up wobbling around. Jackal is suspicious and quickly opens the trenchcoat to reveal 3 kobolds and they run out. The team buys a few supplies, but none of the magical supplies.

Afterward they visit an Armor/weapon shop run by dwarf where Jackal sells his light crossbow and buys a heavy crossbow.

As they leave the shop they hear a voice call out “I found you, you ugly beast!” A bearfolk dressed in wizard robes in front of them turns around and says in a deep voice, “You talking to me?” It’s the fey hunter from Zobeck who has tracked Jackal here. She shoots an arrow at him and the team begins to fight. About a minute into the fight a Destroying Angel joins the fight. He was sent by the Servants of Nidhogg to attack Appaluna. The fight is quite chaotic and Appaluna deals the most damage, but Jackal deals the killing blow to each, including beheading the fey hunter with his axe.

They go to sleep and the next day head to the workshop. After they get the key, they need to take it to get blessed at the Clockwork Temple of Rava. A tin flitkith who works for Little Timmy shows up and gives Ariana and Appaluna each potions of superior healing as a thanks for sparing him when they found him in the airship. There Holdevar (human), the Queen of the Labyrinth blesses the key.

Appaluna asks Hodevar about the Servants of Nighogg and Holdevar says a scout will return with information on the whereabouts of the cultists within a week.

Since they have a week before they can find out the information, Jackal yanks the key from Ariana’s hands and opens the portal. The team steps through and emerges into a forest.

Session 13

Gameplay

(started off with the following flavor-text)

“Ariana, as you look around at this verdant forest you’ve entered by the use of the Portal Key that belonged to your parents, you feel a deeper connection than you’ve ever felt ever since you chose to become a Leaf druid after becoming an adult. It is not just an ancient forest, but it also has a certain vitality and magical quality you’ve never felt before.”
At first Jackal used his survival skills to lead the party, but they started to notice that the forest seemed to be making things extremely easy for Ariana - branches moving out of the way, brush clearing itself. So Ariana took the lead and a stag leads the party to a river. There they follow the river to a large lodge.

When they enter the lodge they find The Great Druid Oberic Thorn (human). He looks up expectantly when they enter, hoping they are the folks he sent out due to the attack, but it’s the adventurers. He asks who they are and introduces himself. He asks them to please rescue Ysabel Sunbloom (female halfling bard) who was taken in a surprise attack against the lodge. He explains that she is extremely important to the cause of the Elders of The Ring. Although he is The Great Druid he cannot look for her because he’s coordinating the efforts of a large group who has fanned out to try and know to figure out who attacked and to organize a counterattack. He lets them know the south hasn’t been searched yet.

As they go south to explore, Ariana touches a tree and asks if it knows where to go. Since Ariana doesn’t know what Ysabel looks like, she can’t directly ask the trees, but they respond that a large group went trampling through the forest in a certain direction. This allows the group to go in the right direction for a while. When they reach the area where the enemies began to pick their way more slowly through the forest, the forest cannot add any more aid. However, Apaluna calls upon her patron and gets the aid they need to move forward.

They arrive at a clearing where a hag is interrogating Ysabel who has been tied up and her flute thrown to the side. There are 3 centaurs in a triangle pattern keeping watch. Jackal surprise attacks one of the centaurs and the battle is on. The hag gags Ysabel to keep her from using any bardic magic. The balance tips in various directions, but Ariana helps keep things going by healing Jackal in a key moment. Eventually, the hag is getting annoyed and decides to try and kill Ysabel. Jackal rushes the hag and attacks. Within another half a minute, Appaluna also rushes the hag to try and keep her from killing Ysabel. Using her pact powers, she does an epic Eldritch Blast and explodes the hag. The hag’s glamour fades and they can see she was an ambush hag - looks like a giant purple insect. The centaurs run away.

They go back to the lodge and Oberic gives them food and advises them to rest so they can speak the next day. Apaluna asks Oberic about Ariana’s parents. Oberic asks for the portal key and realizes who Ariana is. He tells her that he had called for important druids to come help the Elders during a war to save the Elder Ring. They left Ariana to be adopted since they would be engaged in war. They died in battle and are in the celestial worlds. He lets them know they could use The Labyrinth’s paths to visit them. Mossbeard shows up and recognizes the party from when they went to Moonlight to go to Ariana’s friend’s wedding. As a thanks for saving Ysabel, who is important because her bardic magic can help cure people of void taint, he gives Ariana a Dragon Slayer scimitar sword, Jackal a pair of Gloves of Missile Snaring, and Apaluna an Oathbow. Mossbeard then opens a portal to his forest at The Smithy.

Session 14

Gameplay

As the crew leaves Mossbeard’s forest near The Smithy, Jackal looks up and sees a Ratatosk in the trees. It jumps down in front of them and it’s wearing a uniform and has a cylindrical container on its back. It casts a verbal and somatic spell to identify which of the heroes is Appaluna. As she glows, he knows to give her the letter.

She reads the letter from her patron inviting her to the palace of Countess Levosu, mentioning that she needs to come right away, and it tells her to go via the River Styx and also includes the fare for 3 folks to ride. Appaluna finds a dwarf within The Smithy and asks how to get to the River Styx. She’s told to go to the Five Ways Bridge. When they get there they see a few piers on the banks near the bridge. There’s a robed man with a bluish tinge to his skin on a gondola-style boat. They pay for passage and find out his name is Thomas.

As the river flows into the River Styx it widens to be about a mile wide and it gets so deep that Thomas just steers within the current to avoid any obstacles. The party sees much larger boats sailing the river, including galleons. After a day of travel they stop along the banks to rest. Jackal immediately goes to sleep. The girls pull out their bedrolls to sleep.

After a bit, the girls wake up to see a Styx Demon eating Thomas. Appaluna intimidates the demon by manifesting her weapon via her patron’s powers. The demon recognizes who she serves and runs away with Thomas’ body.

Since they no longer have a boatwright to navigate the river they try to get the attention of a ship passing by. It’s too far away and when someone aboard the ship looks towards the shore they think Appaluna is dancing. Another ship passes nearer and Appaluna uses the Message spell to communicate with them to come pick her up. She shows them her invitation and they take the adventurers the rest of the way.

When they climb up from the docks they arrive at the gates to the Greater Hell of Tyver-Sarok. Appaluna presents her invitation to the demon at the gates. He calls for a carriage to take them to Countess Levosu’s palace.

They arrive and a demonic butler opens the door and escorts them to the chamber where Countess Leovosu (an Erinyes with golden skin and a floor-length, form-fitting red dress) lounges on what is not quite a throne. To her side is Appaluna’s patron.

The countess praises the patron, who she names Mr. Smith because his true name would cause trauma if heard by mortal ears, for selecting Appaluna for his patronage. She sees so much potential within her .She then explains why the hells don’t want the Servants of Nidhogg to succeed. The demons and devils are not so much evil as concerned with power. And there would be nothing to have power over if the Servants of Nidhogg were to reduce the worlds of the Labyrinth to nothing. She also says the reason Appaluna’s sister was kidnapped was because they needed someone with a connection to royal birth, but someone so low down the line of succession that it would be likely no one would come to save her. Spymaster Barrosh’s spy network revealed the location and purpose of the ritual. Countess Levosu says it will occur the next day so they should rest up.

The next day Appaulna’s patron sends them with a trusted Demon boatwright to the world where the ritual will take place. It is a world that has been drained of its vitality. The leaves on the trees have withered away. The sun barely has any energy to shine. The ground is cracked and dry.

The party spots a temple of the Servants of Nidhogg. Jackal begins sprinting towards the temple. There are two cultists on guard outside in green robes. From when they went to the Lost Tomb of Nargoth, the party knows the green robes the cultists are wearing denote that these are the second from the lowest level within the cult. One of the cultists spots Jackal and runs to set off a bell alarm. Ariana sets him on fire and he dies. Jackal kills the other by throwing his axes. Ariana dresses in the robes of the cultist they did not set on fire. Jackal and Appaluna use Disguise self to look like the people they killed. They enter the temple and Jackal uses his memory of the orientation of the previous temple to guess where to go.

They find another pair of cultists - this time in purple robes. (Meta: these are Fanatic Cultists) They convince those cultists to run out to the front to investigate the situation outside - saying that the bell is broken and that they thought they saw someone attacking. Jackal and Appaluna then once again change their appearance to that of the purple-robed cultists.

Ariana takes the lead and they arrive at the doors to the inner sanctum. They can hear a ritual going on within. But blocking the door is a Satarre and Satarre Destroyer. They lie to the Satarre Destroyer and he believes their lie, but also believes that the ritual they guard is too important to abandon their post. They leave the room and cast thaumaturgy to make the ground shake and come in yelling that someone or something is tunneling beneath the temple. The Satarre Destroyer sends the Satarre to investigate. Out of ideas, Appaluna uses magic to make the Satarre Destroyer fall asleep.

They open the door to the inner sanctum and find a Necrocraft Cultist performing a ritual over Orangeterra, who is bound laying on the altar. They also see a young void dragon near the altar. Unfortunately, he notices them entering. He bids them to leave because this ritual is too important to be interrupted. It will be completed in a mere half a minute.

Chaos breaks loose as Ariana and Jackal attack the dragon; Ariana using the Dragon Slayer that Mossbeard gave her. Appaluna interrupts the ritual by succeeding at using Command and interrupting the Cultist’s concentration. As the fight progresses the cultists that were earlier deceived come back and join the fight. A little later the two Satarre join the fight. Eventually, the party slays the Nerocraft Cultist. One of the Fanatic Cultists tries to continue the ritual, but keeps getting interrupted. Eventually Jackal lands the killing blow on the young void dragon. After that it’s not too hard to finish off the rest of the enemies.

Appaluna drops her disguise and unties Orangeterra. She realizes that her sister has been drugged and has no idea what is happening; she thinks she’s at a party. Ariana casts restoration and cures Orangeterra.

Ariana then uses her Portal Key to take the party to the Old Ring. There The Great Druid allows them to rest.

The next day Mossboard opens a portal that leads to the forest where Ariana’s friend got married. Appaluna takes her sister back to her house. Her father has to admit that her interaction with demonic powers was key to saving her sister. Appaluna’s status and original titles are returned to her and, in recognition of saving the world, she is given a dornitian barony.

Ariana chooses, for now, to live at Oakroot and provide her druidic services there.

As Jackal is at an inn somewhere in Midgard, a wizard enters. He mentions that his great-great-great-great grandfather invented owlbears. This wizard wanted to be famous for his own hybrid creations so he created Jackal. He buys Jackal a drink since his creation is famous for saving the world.
