heh. when my character was held by a psionic naga using domination, she could 'sing', 'shout' and create mental chatter. Basically, the old tin-cup rattling the cell-bars only in this case, it was purely mental. so why not?

It can be read that a held person is paralyzed, and also can take no actions...

... but it's generally accepted that a held person can take no actions because they are paralyzed, which means that mental-only actions are allowed.

Depends... but my opinion not always fits a generally accepted one. Hold Person is an enchantment, thus the paralysis IMHO is caused by mental disorder or distraction... not by some bodily constraints. A held person acts as paralyzed, but he/she's not. Somehow. It doesn't really make sense ... but IMHO it makes more sense as anything else.

And yes, being paralyzed or stunned or whatever should probably provoke AoOs.
