First Post
Tangent Games is looking for artists to supply art for our forthcoming product - Jute: Faith of Creation. We are looking for previously unpublished artists to provide interior art for the book. Artists should email electronic copies (jpg files or links) of sample art to queries@tangent-games.com with 'Jute - Art Consideration' in the subject line.

Artists should be able to work on a tight deadline and are expected to produce from 1 to 5 pieces of individual art for the final book. (This amount may increase depending on the number of artists selected for the book.) The deadline for submitting sample art is December 15, 2005. We will review all art submitted and contact the artist(s) we want to complete the interior art with details of the images we want produced by January 15, 2006. All artists selected will have their art credited by name in the book and will receive a free copy of the final book (to be published in pdf format).

From the final list of selected artists we will also choose one artist to provide the art for the cover of the book. This artist will receive a 10% royalty from profits of the book. All artists selected to provide interior art will be required to sign an artist contract and a release form. If you have additional questions, please contact us at the email address above.

I think that the interior artist(s) should get a share of the cut as well. They're the one providing more artwork than the one doing the cover art.

Mike and Darth,

Thank you for your question! You each have a valid concern, and we would
like to try to address it here in this open forum.

The cover of one of our PDF-only products is the main opportunity that
we have to make a first impression, and we feel that the quality needed
to make that impression one that will inspire people to buy the product
is important enough to reward the artist selected to do the cover with
proceeds from sales.

Interior art is very important to the overall product quality, but no
one will see that art unless they have already purchased the product
since the potential buyer cannot flip through the pages in order to see
what the art is like as whole prior to purchase.

It is our hope that, in the future, we will be able to offer our
products in print format and at that time, additional consideration and
compensation will be given to interior art providers.

We would welcome any alternative ideas you have for artist's
compensation for future products, and we hope that you will take the
time to submit some examples of your art for this product as well.

well it still doesnt seem fair to not offer everyone involved a share of the profits. I mean, its not like you are paying them from your pocket, so its really no skin off your back if you give them a cut. get one artist to do the art for the book, and offer them a decent rate, like 30% cover and interior pieces.

PDF's dont make that much money, ive done some art for a few of them, and only made about 20 bucks on each one. i did alot of art too. 20 bucks doesnt even cover one simple B&W 1/4 page illo normally.

If you want to make a good impression on the customers, and your peers in the industry, then I would try to be as fair as possible. its not like the quality of the cover artist will be that much greater than the other interior artists when you only are offering 10% the profit for the cover.

Mike,

You make some valid points. We will keep your suggestions in mind when
preparing for our next products. For this product, we will not be
altering the terms as stated in our initial post. Thank you for your
input, and hopefully we can work together - if not on this product, then
perhaps a future one.
