"Thank ye for the welcome", Braddock sits down with his ale.

Addressing K2, "I agree as much as the next that good needs to fight the evil. You can't push this too far however. There can be no good without the bad. No light if there is no dark. Surely the teachings of the Sovereign Host and the Dark Six teach us that?" Braddock gives K2 a wink, as if he isn't sure he believes that fully himself.

Addressing Deimos, "The history of Khorvaire interests me most recently. I spent some time in ancient Dhakanni ruins, researching an ancient goblin leader and general. I learned a great deal... But the ancient primordials also have been a particular interest to me. Tell me, have you come across any ancient entities in your research?"

"Well, I heard the Inspired are part ancient beings. And my family had some deal with others in the past, but I'm afraid I cannot tell you about more recent encounters. I'm mostly not searching about information that deal about them, but how to deal with them." The Deimos responds with a smile and a wink.

[sblock=OOC] Apologies for the silence, I tend to be away from the forums on weekends. That tends to change a bit in an adventure, but Halloween demands a good deal of attention…[/sblock]

Again, as another approaches, Mal stands and offers his hand in greeting. "Greetings. I'm Mal." He gestures around the table naming each of his companions, new and old. "Tock. Deimos. K2. You've probably heard that a few times by now."

The two scholars begin plying their trade with one another and he sits back listening to the conversation and learning about his new drinking companions. While it looks as if he may occasionally have something to add, he mostly keeps quiet.

At a break in the conversation, "Just for my edification, how are we defining 'scholar' here? If it comes down to the pursuit of knowledge or the completion of a contract, which are you going to choose?"

[sblock=OOC note]Mal's not done the adventuring thing before. His general tone should come across as "testing the waters." He's heard stories about adventurers before and he's worked with them in the past, but he doesn't know much about their ethics or mores and he's not at all sure of social conventions.[/sblock]

Tock watches the others talk, curious.

[sblock=ooc]Tock has totally done the adventuring thing before. Many times. So he'd tell anyone. That's why he's so fascinated by this inn... Yeah...[/sblock]

...

"I would certainly try fulfilling my contract... unless the knowledge I gain in between includes proves that the employer wasn't honest to begin with. You know, if he had broke the contract first. Otherwise I would try to acquire as much useful knowledge as possible, without breaking the word of my contract. I could become quite imaginative this end, to be honest." Deimos answers.

Mal nods at the answer. “Fair enough. I’d certainly want to know about a possible breach of contract sooner than later. I guess I did a poor job asking what I intended to ask. Let me try a different approach.”

“We five have been contracted to scout a mercenary camp for House Deneith. They require this information four days hence. We learn, during our travels that there is a spire with a cache of arcane lore held within. We do not know when we might be able to return to the area due to the impending battle. What would you have us do in this scenario?”

He quirks an eyebrow at both Braddock and Deimos, hoping for answers from each.

Unit 16 continues to sit patiently next to his shaggy friend. When the bard does her bout of verbal gymnastics even he seems to crack a smile - nicely done. He begins to understand why some choose to study conversations as a profession. Later, when the gender of one of the patrons is questioned, he listens carefully with a confused look on his face. Why does everyone seem to care so much about this subject? So much still to learn.

[sblock=ooc]THB: BRILLIANT! Very nicely done - I wish I could give you XP! 4M: nice bit of sparring there, and sadly I can't give you XP either. :)

So once again we are back to multiple groups forming, just ready for adventure. At least the tavern seems nicely balanced![/sblock]

"Ah, I see what you're getting to lad," Braddock smiles, repacking his pipe. He pauses, "Ach, sorry if that was crass, I can't rightly tell how old ye be."

"Well, I don't speak for all dwarves, but most are honorable by nature. I would fufill the 'contract': scout the tower and ensure the information received by the employer. If an opportunity arose to return to the tower, I would pursue it later. Or prioritize it on my own and collect a gathering of allies to do so."

He puffs lightly at the pipe, "The manner of things of which I'm interested aren't usually so bound to texts and books as one might think. Libraries, which I've spent a lot of time in the last several years, often are only the start of the journey. Entities of power can leave there mark without leaving instructions in a book."

"I'm with Braddock on this. Just 'arcane lore' without any specifics hasn't such a siren's call for me. Either going back later or finding an even better opportunity. Never worth bringing ones comrades into trouble." Deimos answers truthfully, slightly sniffing to determine what kind of herbs the dwarf is smoking. He knows many different smells of thing burning ;).

Mal responds quietly to Braddock’s comment about guessing his age, “Few can.”

As the historian proceeds, the Genasi frowns slightly, contemplating the answer. At the mention of journeys starting at libraries, he can’t help but smile. The timing seems odd, but he’s been odd from the start.

“Fair enough. Sorry if that insulted your honor. Just better to know ahead of time.”
