Teen killed for his iPod

And by "back in the day," you mean the early to mid-90s, right?

That was the part of that decade that I absolutely hated. The youth gangs of the day were notorious for that kind of crap. It's that whole vanity being placed over human life thing that leaves a distinctively bad taste in my mouth.

Well gangs weren't a 90s-only phenomenon by any means. And they're certainly not gone today. But yeah, gangs aren't good. From what I understand they're mostly a drug trafficking scheme wrapped in machismo and the promise of inclusion to those who are excluded.

If any one here gets a chance, read "Jennifer Government" by Max Barry. The premise of the story is that big marketing executives hire people to kill those who buy their product, so that the products have an image of being dangerous and cool. It is a great book (and might be turned into a movie by George Clooney's production company).

Gangs have been with us, in one form or another, for practically all of America's history. They tend to gain prominence when there are a lot of people with nothing to lose and when there are illegal things that make a very valuable black market. I think that no matter what we do as a country/society, there will be gangs. I guess it's just a question of how do we minimize them?

What about the Scooby gang?
Dude, rampant drug use - Shaggy of course speaks for himself, but less well-known is Velma's meth habit (so she could think faster and move those stubby legs quicker), Daphne dropping X (why do you think she seemed so spacy all the time), and Fred's supply of roofies (how else do you think a guy with a scarf tied around his neck could get Daphne to [censored] his [censored]?).
