Telekinesis - violent thrust

Just have your buddy sling a rock in the air, wait for it to reach it's apex, then target the rock.

Or target a bird, or a mote of dust, or a hypothetical (and almost certaintly absent) flying, invisible creature...

Yep, since you are supposed to be able to target a 'square' for certain combat manuevers then that guys 5th level ability is effectively worthless.

I would rule the force of the spell gets eaten up at double rate for straight up.

If you look at vector mechanic it should not change. Again it depends on your interpretation of the spell. I assume that for the duration of the spell you exert a force against the gravity to void it. Then use the rest of the force to accelerate the target in whichever direction you want.

There are a lot of unknown factor here. Is it a single instantanous impulsion or a constant force applied throught the round. I vote for the following since getting hit by an impulsion that would throw me away 150 meter would deal more than a 10 foot fall.

I use a very simple rule of thumb that I apply to all aspects of "violent thrust".

- violent thrust can be used to do 1d6 per caster level (max 15d6) to a single target. This could be done by hurling a heavy object slowly, a small object very fast or by hurling the target into a wall. As per the book the first option(s) use an attack roll, the final option allows a will ST.

This seems simple, within the spirit of telekinesis, within the damage caps suggested for 5th level spells etc.

Cheers
