Telepath's controlling party, how far can it go?

Okay, in my game, the party is about level 5. Now, the Telepath has been getting a bit liberal with using his powers on other party members.

Do you guys have any ideas on how I can try and curb him from doing this so often?

You could drop a few rings of mindshielding for the group :D

actually even one would do, because If I remember correctly if someone is telling the char like "what the heck are you doing!? thats not you!" they get a bonus to their will save... then again maybe I'm pulling this directly from my ass of holding.

What powers is he using on the party? If he starts to dominate them, well, I'd expect the other party members to kill him at first opportunity. Using such spells is no different than enslavement.

Use real time in combat. It's difficult enough coming up with "what to do" for your own character in six seconds, let alone a number of others. While you shouldn't curb someone ability to utilize a character ability, there's no reaosn that that type of ability should be made easier by extending the amount of time they get to use it.

Are the characters aware of the fact he is using his powers to sway and control them? And what is the party makeup? I'm also wondering what the Telepath is having them do when he uses Suggestion and such.

I'm not sure that you should do anything. Personally, I wouldn't encourage or discourage the players from choosing their own course of action (the Telepath or the others). One thing to be sure an emphasize is that the players are not the characters. It's part of the game for characters to feel violated if they are controled telepathically (if they are or become aware of it), but be sure that the players do not confuse that with a personal violation of themselves. This is one of those times in a game where making sure in advance that everyone treats it as a game is very important.

The party is a Fighter, Paladin, Cleric, Psiwarrior and Psion (telepath).

Now, the Telepath is a merchant. "Oh come now, you know this statue is worth far more than 30 gold pieces!" And most of what he's been doing is "pushing" players when they're reluctant. For example, when they were in a small port town, a giant squid attacked. Now, most of the fishermen had returned to the shore and were running, and this thing comes up near the shore (a la, entrance to Moria in Fotr). So, the fighter goes "I don't want to wreck my armor in the salt water!" and refuses to help. I tell him, "dude, 2 minutes in slat water isn't going to wreck magical armor", but after 3 rounds (and his friends nearly dying) the Telepath uses Suggestion to get his ass into battle.

I know that example isn't so bad, but I'm worried about the future, and what I can do to curb any further attempts to control people like this.

It seems you already have it in your mind to limit what he can do with his character abilities. He may not have been aware of these limitations when you allowed him to play that character and have those abilities in the first place. You may want to discuss this privately with the player, explain the limitations and allow them to create a new character if this wasn't a clear understanding from the beginning.

Well, the Paladin and the Cleric probably aren't very vulnerable to being controlled by the Telepath in most cases, especially the Paladin, with his high saves. Also, unless you have house ruled the "displays", people will be aware of the fact he is casting spells, and if he fails to control someone, they should be aware that an attempt was made.

There's really not much you can do but let nature take it's course, here, unless you want to get the other players involved. The Telepath will have to be careful, or he could incur the wrath of his fellow party members. If you really want to try and prevent that from happening, I suggest giving him a taste of his own medicine. ;) Introduce an NPC for a short time that "pushes" him the same way he pushes the other party members.

He should realize how annoying/infuriating (depending on personality type) it is to have other people control your actions, and hopefully will refrain from such actions in the future. Barring that, I would ask the rest of the players what they think of his actions, and what the other characters think of what he's doing.

If any of the characters are particularly free willed or spirited, they will probably take offense at the Telepaths actions, and bring him to task about it. If the characters don't confront their fellow party member about these actions, he will assume he is free to do as he wishes, and will continue to do so until he either gains full control of the party or it reaches a boiling point and a civil war develops between the party. Both are not very desirable outcomes.
