Teleport pondering...

Tatsukun

Danjin Masutaa
Hi all, I thought up this question in the "bag of holding as transit" thread but am posting here to avoid a hijack. Here is the situation…

Bob the fighter is unconscious (like, say -7 Hp), but his group thinks he is dead. Mike-o the wizard can teleport himself and three other people. So, the Wizard, Rogue, Cleric, and Barbarian all hold hands, and the barbarian picks up the fighter's "Body".

What happens?

Is the fighter an object because he is being carried? Is he one because he is unconscious? Can he be a willing creature while unconscious?

Furthermore, does the spell just fail if too many people are holding hands? Does it take the max it can (in this case 3)? If so, how does it choose?

Ideas / opinions?

In fact, he can only be a willing creature while unconscious.

Some spells restrict you to willing targets only. Declaring yourself as a willing target is something that can be done at any time (even if you’re flat-footed or it isn’t your turn). Unconscious creatures are automatically considered willing, but a character who is conscious but immobile or helpless (such as one who is bound, cowering, grappling, paralyzed, pinned, or stunned) is not automatically willing.

So make sure your teleporting wizard carries a pocket knife and enough money for a Raise Dead...

Hah, this actually happened in a game I was in. The DM ruled that the fighter was cargo, and the teleport worked. But he also ruled that we wouldn't check if the fighter was dead, so we paid for raise dead, which failed. Doh!

So what happens when you try to teleport with too many people holding hands? Can a wizard walk up to a pig-pile and choose which ones to take?

Well, technically, the ruling was that we couldn't. I think we all tried... But, hey, how's that for realism, right Tatsu? I remember our conversation about "saved by the bell".
