Tell me about Montreal...

I have just accepted a job offer that would put me there. What can you tell me about living in Montreal (cost of living, ability to get by with essentially no french)?

A friend of mine tells me that you can get by without French surprisingly well, and I have no reason to doubt him.

I live in southern Vermont. The last time I wass there was to see an EXPOs game back in the late 80's. Speaking french helps but was not required. They had a decent art musuem I remember visiting and a decent bar. Keep in mind I was only 18 at the time so my memory of it is slanted to things other than the costs of things.

You can get by in Montreal fine without speaking French - although it depends on which part of Montreal you are living in - the west end of the island, most of Laval, downtown, and most of the south shore of Monteal are fine. The rest of the island, and the surrounding areas will be a little more difficult without French - but not impossible.

The cost of living of Montreal is very comparable to the cost of living in Ottawa (which I see is where you are currently located).

The restaurants, bars and nightlife are excellent. There is quite a bit of historical sites too - seeing as the city is well over 300 years old.

Nightlife and culture are not so much my thing, what with me being a gamer geek.

Finding gamers once I am in Montreal is not likely to be too difficult. New job is with Ubisoft, and the friend who helped get me the job made the effort at least in part because he wants his old DM back.

A cost of living comparable to Ottawa is about what I expected, but its good to see that confirmed.

Taxes in Quebec are pretty onerous, from what I understand. My fav hockey team's the Canadiens, and they have trouble attracting free agents due to both the language barrier and the taxes, and not necessarily in that order.

Gaming-wise, it's a good place to be, I think. I count a number of ex-Montrealers as gaming buddies, plus I bought my Tact-Tiles from one of the only places in Canada that sell them, L'Imaginaire in Montreal.
