Tell me of the Amazon Kindle

Although I don't own a Kindle, I provide support for Kindle at work.

I do not recommend using Kindle for PDFs, specifically PDFs of reference books such as gaming books. Kindle is best for reading novels and non-fiction books that are similarly formatted. Although they can be used for viewing PDFs, the screen is not big enough to display an entire page as a readable page and it is sometimes unsuccessful reformatting the display of the page to fit the Kindle screen. PDF support is currently experimental on Kindle.

But the biggest reason for you to not buy a Kindle is because you do not live in the US and Kindle content is geographically restricted. The Whispernet wireless network does not exist outside of the US. And even though there is a way to download books through the USB connection, you must use a US credit card with a US billing address to buy Kindle books and other content. And if you are not going to use Kindle to buy and read at least several dozen Kindle books, then it is not really worth getting.

I recommend instead putting the $400 bucks you were going to spend toward a laptop, such as a Tablet PC, with a screen large enough that can display an entire PDF page on its screen while remaining readable. However, I have scrolled further down and found that you have purchased one.

Since you have already purchased a Kindle and are using it for your gaming PDFs, then I recommend converting the PDFs into a TXT or DOC file, strip away the page framing, then transfer the text to the Kindle. It will then become a lot more usable on Kindle. More information about converting your personal documents can be found here.

Simplicity, If you have a Kindle book that does not display correctly, contact Amazon.com and they will refund you if you wish and then update the book.

Ruined, I'm happy to say that Kindles are currently in stock, after months of supply frustratingly not meeting demand. It appears that they will remain in stock from now on.

According to Amazon customer service, you can only buy books from the Kindle store if you have a credit or debit card issued by a U.S. bank.

I wish they had actually mentioned this little detail on the Kindle product page. I am not very happy right now...
I'm sorry that I didn't see this thread when it first came out, or I would have been able to tell you about this. It's all about the licensing restrictions with the book publishers.

I wanted to let you know that "Currently, item can be shipped only within the U.S." is on the Kindle product page and "Is Kindle available to customers outside the United States?" is in the Kindle FAQ, and this issue normally doesn't come up since ordering the Kindle online prevents shipping address from outside of the US from being used.

You do realize that you chose to try to circumvent this restriction by ordering it while traveling to the US? I'm sorry if I sound like a douche, but I don't have much sympathy for people who are trying to hack around legal restrictions and then get burned with the result.

I hope you know that Kindle has a generous 30 day return policy.

Or...you can get a credit card from a US bank and provide a US billing address. If you have one, that is.
