Templates and Character Level

Hi, this may have been asked before but since I was not around to see it and can't find it on these boards I want to ask, if you have a Half-Dragon Template and say 2 levels of Barbarian are you a 5th level character or a 2nd level character for purposes of spells like sleep? If you are 5th level then does this mean you have 2 feats and +1 to any ability score? I was looking in the DMG but couldn't find anything on that and nothing in the MM either, so can someone help me out?

Sleep is based on Hit Dice.

A Half-Dragon Barbarian-2 only has 2 Hit Dice.

So are you also only Level 2 for determining Feats and Ability score bonuses?

Yup. You get a feat at Half-Drag Brb-3 and Brb-6, and you get ability bumps at Brb-4 and Brb-8.

Talk to your DM about how your ECL interacts with the Leadership feat, though.
