Tests and Trials (Manzanita Judging)

Devlin Magruder, human rogue 3

Devlin looks back at his comrades, an uneasy expression on his face. "I may need your divine assistance in a minute, Garrit," he says as he lays his crossbow on the ground. Devlin then toes the line and faces the wolf. With a look of resignation on his face, he lifts his foot and stomps on the ground.

Garrit Kelspire, Paladin 1 of Hyrag

OOC: Well I'm playing this thing out while I'm still around...

Garrit will move to stand next to Devlin, then ready an action to attack if any wolf comes to within threat range.

"I don't give divine assistance, only Hyrag. However, I'll do what I can on the Sun God's behalf. By the way, this might seem like a strange time to say it, but I was not in the best of moods this morning, and even talking about my great deity wasn't on my mind at the time."

The wolf strikes the ground again, and Devlin follows suit, and once more the exchange occurs. Then both opponents leap at each other. Devlin, with a stroke of luck, gets his hit in first.

[sblock]OOC1: Initiative: Wolf 19, Devlin 22

OOC2: What are you fighting with? Weapon? Bare hands?

OOC3: Sorry, Animus, didn't mean to commandeer your character. But if you've lost interest, don't feel obligated to stay. I'll be happy to NPC Garrit if it'll just be a burden.[/sblock]

Devlin takes a jab at the wolf and gets so close to cutting it that he cuts hair off the wolf's hide. But the wolf is too fast, and the dagger catches nothing. The wolf lunges forward, its great fangs latching on to Devlin's upper thigh, his flesh ripping in a terrible, painful sound. Devlin screams in agony as the wolf, still holding Devlin's leg with its powerful jaws, yanks back and trips the hapless rogue. He now lies prone on the ground.

[sblock]OOC: Devlin's atk roll: 13. Fail. Wolf's atk roll: 20. Crit confirm: 16. Dmg: (6x2)+1=13. Trip attempt, wolf vs. Devlin: 8 vs. 3. Trip succeeds, Devlin is now at 4/17 and prone.

OOC2: That was the worst possible roll combination that could happen. Wow.

OOC3 to Animus: Not a bother at all. Feel free to go. But tell me of your decision so I can NPC him.[/sblock]

Devlin tries to hold the wolf at bay with the dagger while he regains his feet.

ooc: Move Action = standing from prone, Standard Action = total defense

Luthiel Faradar Elven Rogue1

OOC: Is it too late to get in on the initiative count here?
IC: Luthiel watches the wolf closely, intending to fire an arrow at it should it attempt to kill the injured man.
OOC2: If I can get in the count, Luthiel will ready an action to fire at the wolf, but he will use the Aid Another action to distract it, adding 2 to Devlin's AC

Devlin tries to get up off the ground to continue the fight, but his movement opens him up to another attack. The wolf lunges forward and its jaw clamps around Devlin's other leg. This time, though, he feels no pain, only a tug as he collapses to the ground again.

The wolf places its paw on Devlin's chest and howls for a long, tense moment. The other wolves soon join in the howl and more can be heard from far away, deeper into the forest. Like the night before, the chorus is chilling, but just like then, no wolves attack.

Finally, the lead wolf stops howling, though the others continue, and it backs away from the severely injured Devlin and bends its front paws and lowers its head, looking strangely human in its canine bow.

The other three wolves present stop howling and do the same toward Devlin, then turn around and bow at the others.

[sblock]OOC: Wolf AoO, melee touch atk: 17. Trip attempt, Devlin vs. Wolf: 7 and 15. Devlin is once again prone.

OOC2: I posted right after Scout did. Luthiel's initiative is 11. If he still wants to fire the arrow, he can. It would take place before all this bowing stuff went on.[/sblock]

Luthiel Faradar Elven Rogue1

OOC: Under the circumstances, I'd have to say that would be about the dumbest thing I could do :heh:
IC: Still not understanding what has happened, Luthiel returns the bows. Then he says "Cryndo, perhaps it would be a good idea to offer to heal the wolf that was injured as a sign of good will, if you still have the energy left after healing Devlin."
Turning to the wolves, Luthiel muses out loud, "Hmm, I wonder how on earth we can communicate anything with these wolves. We seem to have no common language, and charades would be a little tricky- as well as kinda silly."
He comes out of his revery suddenly, then says "Excuse me, sir wolf. Do you actually understand my words?" He watches closely for any reaction.
