The 1e Tournement

Advanced Adventures #15: Stonesky Delve by XRP

I think we were the only ones who organized and held one this year. And by we I mean Joe Browning of Expeditious Retreat Press. A few months ago he had the idea of trying a 1e tournament and he wrote a module for it and recruit two other 1e DMs to help run the tables. I was one of those DMs and as it turned out the most lethal by a long shot!

It was a two day event and everyone had to sign up for both days. It was not the type of tournament where only certain groups get to play in the second day. The module (Stonesky Delve) was designed to be run in two parts one on each day. We had three tables and each hosted ten players and all the tickets sold very quickly. Not everyone who bought a ticket showed up as my table only had 8 the first day.

Everyone at my table knew 1e pretty well though many had not played in a couple of decades. I handed out characters as no one really had any preference for what to play. I was amazed on how many people brought their 1e books with them. We literally had at least one copy of each hardbound book at the table. This was useful as I did not bring any books with me.

One of the great things was sitting their with the 1e screen up before the game was going to run. I had a dozen or so people pass by and comment that it was awesome someone was running 1e or that they wish they knew of it and had signed up. Even the Wizards personnel came by and talked to me about it. Which reminds me, we held this in the WotC ball room that they had and that worked great. I saw 2e, 3e, and 4e games being run side by side. We even got swag from Wizards for running in their room. The staff seemed to be on the ball and organized. They were grouping players together that were looking for games and finding DMs for them. I was only there for two mornings but what I saw looked great.

I am really hoping XRP does this again next year. I was nervous and anxious as this was my first official event I've run at Gen Con and the first time I ran a sanctioned event at a con in over a decade.

It's awesome that someone was doing it.

We are hoping to do it again next year. A new module needs to be written of course and if we get lucky we'll get some more DMs for even more tables. Once things start to come together I want to announce it here to let people know.

I might write one up but it would heavily spoil the module which incidentally is for sale from XRP. I figure I might as well plug the module for them! :D

I was originally going to DM as well, Chris, but realized that wasn't making the finances cut several months ago, so I had to bow out. I'm glad to hear that it went well :D
