The 32-page d20 Fantasy Spellbook

As for your layout specs: I can't get my file to open right now (the one with the details of the C&C and D&D PHB layout specs), but the two column layout actually saved more space than the three column layout. This surprised me, because when I used to do layout for a newspaper, it seemed to be the opposite. However, Switching from 2 to 3 columns is a breeze in all layout programs so we'll see what we end up with.
Did you look at the files I attached?

2 columns works better for spells in the standard format because fewer headers take two lines than in 3 column mode. But if you run the headers into a single paragraph, 3 columns is the way to go.

Sorry -- due to some registry problems, I'm in the middle of backing up and reformatting my computer. I'll take a look at them in the morning, but I trust that you are correct.

Sorry for the radio silence. I had to reformat my computer, and now I'm getting ready for HeroesCon in Charlotte.

I should be back on track Monday or so.

Just a note: in case anyone was wondering, this is intended to be an OGL (obviously)project. That is, once it's finished, it will be presented in an SRD format for anyone to do with what they want from there. If you think you can print it and sell it, go ahead. If you want to use it as the basis for a modified d20 magic system, that's cool too!

Here's what would be awesome (in my opinion)... Take the most popular d20 spells, create art for what they WOULD look like IN a spellbook, limit each to one page. Sell as a full color book.

I was able to bring it down to 72 pages, including a Table of Contents to help locate spells. Of course, this is the list for my campaign, which is about 95% of that of the standard rules and a few OGL spells mixed in. Just thought you'd want to know what kind of compression I was getting off of this.

Hasta,
Flynn

Sleep is already really weak, since it doesn't affect HD past 5, getting it at 3rd level means no one would ever use. Bumping Summon Monster I up to 2nd level means Summon Monster IX becomes a 10th level spell.

I would suggest keeping the 1 round casting time, and just listing it as an exception in the header. Otherwise, if the casting time is not listed, it's assumed to be a standard action.
Best way to fix summon monster is make it 1 action casting time and limit a summoned creature to a standard action the round their summoned (since I believe the reasoning is that you shouldn't be able to trade your standard action for a summoned creature's full round).

Thanks for the update, Flynn.

I'm pretty sure this is a reachable goal now -- that's probably why I haven't been quite as focused on it.

I certainly feel the same "urges" as others: to clean up or modify the magic system, and sometimes those urges sidetrack me :-)
