I'm one of the 3 (so far) who voted yes, but I have to qualify. I played 2e in the early '90s and then stopped in college due to lack of time and a gaming group. I started again about 3 years ago because my wife knew I had fond memories of D&D and found the 3.5 basic game at a game store. So it's not that the basic game itself was so great of an introduction but rather that having it was an impetus to get the books and start playing again.
