Even though this boxed set had rules that did not exactly match either 4e or Essentials it was still an okay value just for its physical components. The dice, double sided map, monster tokens, an cards were all very reusable, the included adventure was not bad. The rules where somewhere in between 4e and Essentials with the characters not being situated firmly on either side.

It seemed like it was basically a draft version of the the E-classes and rules with maybe a couple of minor omissions just for simplicity's sake perhaps. Things like the slightly different selection of powers, etc. probably was just related to last minute changes or maybe they just thought the RB thief would simply be easier to use when starting out and people would be smart enough to realize they could just keep the powers when they went to use the HotF* versions, since 'everything is core'! lol. In practice it was OK, and the various stuff included really was perfectly usable. So yeah, $9.99 wasn't a BAD deal for the physical product, though I always kind of thought that they could have included a couple more levels in there.

Fortunately, I purchased the actual 4e Red Box back in the day. I just finished "scanning" the cards into my phone.

One thing I noticed: "Backstab" grants a +3 bonus to hit instead of a damage bonus.

When I get rich enough to buy WotC from Hasbro, I'm going to have each edition reissued in 3 boxed sets--Basic, Expert, and Master. Each box will have 10 xp levels of play, will include dice, blank dry-erase maps, an introductory adventure, and generic tokens for characters and monsters. They will also include a copy of "The Lazy DM" by Mike Shea. Also, a t-shirt.

Lazy DM: Best book. It should be distributed like a bible.
