D&D 5E The 5e Big Book Mega Campaign!

My current campaign in 5E is the same one my group and I have been playing in for 25 years. It takes place across worlds...Oerth, Toril, Golarion, Arta (homebrew), and Athas. We make heavy use of Planescape concepts and cosmology, and Sigil plays an important part.

One group of PCs is made up of high level PCs from over the years of the campaign. Some have existed since AD&D. Others have joined along the way. Converted to 5E, we've made them all 15th to 17th level.

The second group of PCs started in 5E with Lost Mines of Phandelver. I've run them through that, as well as a variety of other adventures or parts of adventures including: Dead Gods (2E Planescape), Anauroch (3E Forgotten Realms), Princes of the Apocalypse (with only the air temple in the Dessarin Valley, the others I am locating elsewhere), and they are currently trapped in Barovia for Curse of Strahd.

The lower level group is now level 8. They've interacted with the higher level group a bit. I vary it up so that different things happen for each group, and the story interacts between the two threads pretty loosely. More and more the two different stories are starting to come together.

I plan on using almost all the 5E products at some point, or parts of them at least. Along with tons of home brew and also older edition modules and products.

I like going kind of cosmic with things so this playstyle fits that epic feel I want. It's going good so far, and I find it very easy to convert things for 5E.

Can you pick out chapters from the bigger campaign books and drag and drop them into your own campaign world? No. Not really very easy. Not nearly as easy as all the stand alone modules from the TSR days.

However, that doesn't mean the new adventure paths have no value for importing into your own campaign world. I've mentioned this before, but it is my belief that the reason we aren't seen campaign setting books for Ravenloft or the Underdark is because the new adventure paths are a combination of the adventure+campaign setting into one book. A huge chunk of each of these adventure paths is campaign setting material, and not necessarily anything that will ever be in the adventure.

So in that regard, there is a lot of campaign setting material in the adventure paths that you can put into your own campaign. in addition to this, there are lots of things that you can drag and drop for locations, like the towns in SKT. Need a quick town with NPCs? Just drop in Brynshander or something. all you have to do is ignore the plot of the giants attacking. But the maps and NPCs are things you can easily use into your own campaign.

So...basically....no, you can't drag and drop the adventure paths without a TON of work. But there is a lot of campaign setting material there that you can drag and drop easily.

I have done exactly that, actually. You are correct that it isn't as easy as it was for the old school modules, but it can be done. How difficult it is depends on what you want to do.
