The Animatrix

While Matriculation made my head hurt, the way the robot was presented was incredible. I'm sticking its animators in with the voice actor and animators of Gollum. These people need to be recognized.

I would agree a hundred percent, it was beautiful, but the story was a little off context, but intresting.
I absolutely loved Detective Story, I'm a sucker for black and white
film noir attitude and this short had that in spades, and was nicely animated. Of course attitude is to be expected from the creator of Cowboy Beebop, what he needs to do is secure the rights to Raymond Chandler and make animated versions of the Philp Marlowe novels, twoud be awesome.

Overall the short nature of the shorts, made the animatrix to me a very worthwhile diversion, but not particularly edifying or additive to the entire matrix experience. I almost wish they had done less shorts and more concentration on a particuliar theme.

Nice to see the wochowski brothers giving love out to Juno Reactor, as well.

World Record both sucked and blew. the 2 parter was informative, but not entertaining. (didn't Morphous say that they didn't know the specifics of the robot rise?) Of the others , each one was prety cool but I wouldn't buy it, it doesn't fit together as a whole, IMO.

I believe he said that they didn't know all the specifics but they did have some info.

They weren't supposed to.

You'll have to bear with me for a moment. I rented the movie quite a few days ago and can't remember the names of all the eps, but I do remember that I loved the Last Flight of the Osiris, and absolutely hated World Record. I liked the one where the woman had to kill the guy named Duo (I jumped for joy when I found out that was his name) only to find out it was a test. I also liked the Matriculous one, and the detective and Second Renasiance pt. 1-2. Kid's Story was okay, and the one with the lost cat didn't really hold my interest. Am I missing any?

Second Renaissance was incredible. I can't remember the last time I saw a film that was that evocative of emotion. That one really grabbed the heart (or some other organ) and squeezed hard. I loved it.

The other one I really enjoyed was Program, which was also very powerful, but in a much more overt, and less complex, way. Top notch.

I also liked A Detective Story. I've always had a soft spot for those film noir kinda pictures. The whole PI thing was just too good, IMHO.

I thought Kid's Story had a very positive message. It was basically all about faith; not in the religious sense either. What the kid said right before he let himself fall off the building was the crux of the film, "Neo. I know it wasn't a dream. I believe." It's a story about that he completely put his faith in another, and that's what brought out his true strength, which was how he was able to save himself. Him letting himself fall from the top of that building was meant to be a literal leap of faith; not suicide.

Why is there such hatred for World Record? I enjoyed it.

Don't know either. I thought it was ok. Matriculated is the one I really disliked, everything else is at least average.

And yes, Second Renaissance was awesome and my favorite piece on the disc. [/B]

Same here, it really adds to the back story and the art style doesn't disagree with me.

World Record and Second Renissance were two of the best shorts on the DVD. I can't pick one that is 'the best' simply because the standard for all of them was so high in terms of animation, character development (very hard to do in 15 or less minutes) and story telling.

(SPOLIERS)
Of all of them I found Last Flight of the Osiris, while technically flawless, to be one of the weaker stories. They find the drillers, they send out an alert, they die. The sword fight was cool at the begining but I feel this one was more a showcase for hwo far CGI has come over the years rather than any innovation in storytelling or characters. That being said I still liked it.

All in all a DVD worth buying and the extra History of Anime is a very good introduction to the genre.

The Second Renaissance part 1 and 2 were my favorites, the Final Flight of the Osiris was alright if you like that sort of thing. Program was excellant, exactly what I expect anime should be like. The rest were okay, but I didn't really enjoy Detectives Story and Matriculated.
