The Apprentice Tier

Not for a serious, multi-session story arc; spend a half-hour, hour tops, as a sort of a way to establish background for a character. Might even be a "solo adventure" players can do before the first group gaming session to help set up their character's story of how a normal guy became a hero...

From what I read, the D&D essentials product (for players) is doing something like this to help new players wade through the choices for building a character.

I want that bully in that childhood scenario to reappear .... maybe even as a hero or rival now that would rock. It was as I said just one encounter played out and my character had a gift that was featured by it (being able to fight/basic attacks anyway with the precision and predictive clarity of my characters mind -- I could have envisioned it as a weapon becoming shiny and magical in my hand...) which is what made it interesting... as a single player intro, it "can" definitely be fun.... Another characters feature might be less appr. I think for most characters that means giving them atleast one at-will from the class as an at-will.
