Still, it might be easier if you wait for Arcane Power.

Arcane Power + PHB2 + FRPG makes an all-arcane party with all roles filled doable. Though you might want to wait for the Eberron Player's Guide (or raid the D&DI preview) for the Artificer as your leader, as it's got a more 'wizard-ish' vibe than the Bard, I think.

Going all-arcane as opposed to all-wizard means that you've got

defender - swordmage (FR)
striker - sorcerer (PHB2/March 17) or warlock (PH1)
leader - bard (PHB2) or artificer (Eberron/July 21)
controler - wizard (PH1)

I did something similar in AD&D - was a mini campaign that lasted about 7 levels.
It took a lot of tailoring. And the premise was he was busy with something so he didn't want to go to some mage guild formal party and sent his apprentices to represent him. Had them meet a variety of NPCs that could serve as contacts later on and other random plot seeds for side treks. When they returned, the teacher had dissapeared.

In 4e, you could make an all arcane power source party that the wizard taught (or a couple class choices if not the entire power source). As others said, some multiclassing or mixed races to allow for variety if the power choices aren't enough variety. And maybe "a close friend" / brother to allow for a random other type of character.
But, yeah, being able to find variety will be a good thing (otherwise everyone will be a clone of one another).

depending on how long you want the one shot to run, you might consider loosening up the magic item selection a bit. It would need to be players who are familiar enough with the system that the items didn't over whelm them, but getting a staff of defense, somewhat better armor, etc, would also help players round out the party defenses. (and since they have a higher level master in the background, it could be them "borrowing" his selection of items.
