The artificer class is brilliant

Eberron's artificer core class is one of the most interesting classes I've ever seen in a d20 product (core or prestige). It looks like a perfect blend of clever abilities, balanced mechanics and flavorful ideas (including mechanics that reinforce the flavor of the setting), and unlike some of the new core classes I've seen in other products, it is 100% deserving of being a core class.

The level of I want to play one! I got from reading the artificer is pretty intense, and not something I feel very often about a new class. Cool. :D

what are the class details?

d6 HD, Cleric BAB, 4 skill points, light & medium armor, shields and simple weapons. Cannot cast spells but can create "infusions," which are essentially instant, one-shot magic items. Also, they have a reserve of pseudo-XP which can be used specifically for creating new magic items, and lots of item creation bonus feats.

Yep and you can sumulate spell-effects during item creation with the use Magical Device skill. Therefore allowing you to be the ultimate magical artisan. Also infusions take about one mintue to put on an item (unless you use action points), so there's less chance you'll go into every situation with bull's strength, protection from evil, magical vestmaents... and so on and so forth.

Ooh, one of my players was recently looking for an artificer class... a wizard who makes things instead of casting spells. We'd actually started trying to come up with one of our own, but it came out all garbled and such.

What book is this in? We'd be VERY interested. It sounds like EXACTLY what we wanted/still want.

it's in Eberron, and it's right up your alley, you know as long as you like keeping your use magic device skill ranks maxed you'll be as good as any spellcaster.

Going by the Eberron post icon, and the first four words of the post being "Eberron's artificer core class," I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it's probably from a Complete Arcane preview or something. :p ;)
