Here's my answer to him:Rat, Raven and others tiny animals have Hide Dice: ¼ d8 (1 hp)
Awakened Rat will have:
Hide Dice: ¾ d8 (3 hp) or
Hide Dice: ¼ d8 plus 2d8 (10 hp) or
Hide Dice: 2d8 (9 hp) but count as 3 HD creature
Makes sense? I would love to hear some more opinions on this topic...Although I'm not sure where this is spelled out explicitly, my impression is that it would advance to 2 HD: 2d8 (9hp).
For example, the Grig is listed as a 1/2 d6 creature, with Advancement: 1-3 HD. So if you advance it by one HD, it becomes a 1HD, 1d6 creature.
Anyone have an official quote for this? I know that's the way it works when you add character levels: you just replace the partial HD with the first class HD.
A related issue is how many skill points such a creature gets in total. Note that even fractional HD creatures get full skill points to start with, i.e. 4 x (2 + Int mod, minimum 1) for animals. Normally that amounts to 4 skill points, because their Int is 1 or 2. However, awakened animals increase in Int *before* you add the extra HD. I've been reasoning that you don't retroactively add 4 x Int mod for that first HD, even though you effectively swap that first fractional HD for an extra HD.
1/2 HD creature, 4 skill pts. -> 2HD awakened, 4 + (2 + Int mod) skill pts.
1 HD creature, 4 skill pts. -> 3HD awakened, 4 + 2 x (2 + Int mod) skill pts.
2 HD creature, 5 skill pts. -> 4HD awakened, 5 + 2 x (2 + Int mod) skill pts.
3 HD creature, 6 skill pts. -> 5HD awakened, 6 + 2 x (2 + Int mod) skill pts.
etc...
