The Banewarrens: Allies and Enemies

Titus leans against the southern wall of the estate, listening and waiting for the others to return.

OOC: Krug, Titus cast Cat's Grace on you, but doesn't have invisibility at his disposal.

OOC: Can I get the Bull's Strength?

Malikar attempts to scale the wall, [Climb +9 and whatever I get from Bull's Strength] and will lower a rope down for anyone who has difficulty ascending the wall. He attempts to hide in the shadows of the wall, but the large man is clearly unused to concealing his location. [Hide +2]

The guard leads Folo and Bono into the kitchen and introduces them to a older half-elf named Pomia. She appears to be the head of the servants. As the guard leaves, she instructs the two halflings, "This is were you will be working for the present. If you demonstrate some manners and skills, you might be asked to serve the family directly. If you turn out to be lackwits, you'll be sent down to the stables. You'll sleep in the pantry over there."

"Mistress Vladaam insists on meeting all new servants. Come with me. Speak when spoken to, stand up straight, and address the lady as Mistress." Pomia leads you south through the house to the dining room, where a finely-dressed, dark-skinned woman sits at the table enjoying a sumptuous lunch.

"These are the new servants?" She asks of Pomia, who nods. "Well, tell me your names and what skills you possess. Teilbarth mentioned you in passing, but I didn't get all the details."

Krug, Malikar, and Nicalon head over the wall (Dyrnas?). The moon is covered by some clouds, and it appears that it may begin raining later. True to Nicalon's description, there are large clumps of trees and bushes within 40 feet. The guardhouse is visible from this part of the wall, but you don't see any guardsmen in the windows.

Moving through the trees you make your way towards the southern end of the house. At one point you hear dogs barking. You wait for a few moments, but the pack does not appear. Perhaps the noise is coming from another estate.

The bushes bring you within forty feet of the south wall of the house. The three story building has numerous windows, although no doors are present on the south or east sides.

Folo stands tall and proud, "Greetings Mistress. My name is Folo Bragins and this is my cousin Bono Bragins. Begging you ladyship's pardon but my cousin is mute. He is a great stable hand and knows his way around a privy and chanbers. I myself am an accomplished courtier and have been for many years a favorite at the Elven courts." Folo blushes at the comment but remains composed. "I could be your ladyships advisor as I was to Tyrillia Everheart; Lady of the Verdant fields of Grandion."

Fallon mentions a minor noble of an elvish court that the woman probably had heard of in passing.

*Bilbo. Bilbo what have you been able to find?* He thinks to his Psicrystal.

So, do we climb to one of the windows or what? Didn't you mention some kind of secret door, Nicalon? Malikar didn't enjoy sneaking around noble's mansions at night. It made him feel like some kind of base robber-thief. This is not a story I'll tell to my kids, he decides, smiling slightly.

Navanna Vladaam peers at Folo with apparent interest. "A courtier in the Elven courts, even. I should have Teilbarith flogged for not giving me the full details. You could be a most useful servant indeed. I'm sure Pomia has work for your cousin as well."

"Tell me, what brings you to Ptolus. Was your parting from Tyrillia Everheart an unfortunate one?"

Bilbo responds, "Many rooms on the second floor, but most of them are locked. No sign of guards or residents."

-----------------------------------------

Krug looks at the visible windows, and is relieved to see that no figures are visible in any of them.

Nicalon moves swiftly and surely to the library window on the south wall. "Follow me," he says, drawing a tool and inserting it into the space between the panes. "The secret door is inside this room, on the second bookcase from the west wall." He gently swings the window open.
