So, all that being said, having a large number of empty rooms is something the game moved away from, but they actually DO serve several purposes when playing the game in the original style.
Like most of the abandoned rules from the early editions. They were not weird or made by people who were still figuring things out. Those very really quite sophisticated systems of interdependent mechanics made for very intentional purposes.

Except the weird backwards way to calculate a hit, of course.
