I am looking for a quality Mass combat system for use in D&D Here are the ones i have and what i think about them.

Minatures Handbook system-- Detailed and desgined o.k. but it would be simple to just use the WARHAMMER system instead.

Agimimnon's MCS (Yes the one and only on 3rdediton.org)-- Although it is undetailed and compleatly free I would have to say it is the best i have seen.
(To AGIMIMNON you should finish the rules and publish them as they are awsome. p.s. please don'd strike me down with your sword of sarcasm)

I am not sure but someone else might have posted a similar thread before?

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME

p.s. here are Agi's rules : http://www.3rdedition.org/agimimnon/viewer.asp?ID=106

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.

Fields of Blood is hard to beat.

It's provides enough tactical detail to make mass combats interesting. But you don't get bogged down in the minutiae (or costs) of some wargaming. Plus the rules, are extremely adaptable -- and blend in with a great realm management system.

Haven't seen Agimimnon's version yet -- but, by the very nature of being free, it certainly contributes to the wealth of material on this subject.

Another Fields O' Blood vote. If you are looking for a computer-run system, check out the Farland Mass Combat program in the downloads section. While good for smaller mayhem and riots, I like FoB for the ease of use and running realms.

Agimimnon's system summarized

I just got done reading Agimimnon's offering. It's not really a system so much as some ideas toward a system (which he says in the article). The basic mechanic is excellent, though and neatly incorporates important d20 ideas like AC and Attack Bonus. I can sum it up quickly:

Each unit is all the same type and has HP, AC and Attack Bonus of the individuals, plus a a leadership value (calculated as in the Leadership feat), average damage done and the number of individuals in the unit.

When a unit attacks, roll:
1d20 + attack bonus + leadership - defender's AC

This gets you a percentage called Attack Efficiency (AE) to use in the next step. I assume if your AE is 0 or less the attack has no effect.

Defender Casualties = (AE * average damage * unit size) / Defenders HP

I haven't tested this, obviously, but it seems solid to me. Any combat between similar forces will last a while, as it should.

Agimimnon challenges the readers to complete the system in his article, but the article was written two years ago. I'm going to start a thread and see if anybody is interested! Maybe we can make the system Beowolf wants!
