The Center of Time

Lost in thought for days now, and often given to eying the little intellect/memory boosters she'd bought before leaving, Echo drifts up behind Seregal like a leaf in the wind. She looks at what's happening, but it's hard to say if she sees it or not, at least from her expression.

In truth she does, but is focused entirely on trying to suss out what is happening...is this an attack on the man? Or is the Augur trying to help him against the strange glowing homunculus?

Ohm Eleven, A Mechanical Nano who Talks to Machines

[sblock=Even More Shopping]With only his Infiltrator (lvl 5) and shins, Ohm Eleven examines the bright green fuzzy toy beast and blue crystal that glows brightly when you hold it. He is not sure about them but wanted to examine them more closely.[/sblock]

Wisco experiences a shiver that runs down his spine. He is not sure if it is of excitement at having unlocked a piece of the puzzle, or of trepidation at the idea of being "concentrated".

Wisco considers what he has seen and what was said again. The frequent forgetfulness, the gaps in conversation, the switching of speaker mid-sentence. Does the hive mind serve as some form of shared memory from which they can draw if they forget something? It would explain much, including the brittleness; a whole community slowly forgetting who it was. It was a horrible thought. And those 'who just need to get away', were they people who had lost so much that they just forgot who they were and wondered off?

Should he accept the offer to be concentrated? There seems little point if I am self-sufficient.

But would being concentrated allow him to share the Auger's memories and to understand what was happening here? Would it in turn make him vulnerable to what they are suffering? Would it help the Auger's be more resilient if he was concentrated into the collective? Questions that he needed to ask before he made a decision. But first he needs to confirm his underlying assumption.

"Does being concentrated allow you to draw on each others' memories?"

[sblock=OOC]Assuming the answer is yes, Wisco will follow up with his other questions.[/sblock]

"All experiences and memories are shared to achieve completion. All previous segments have had lacks that required concentration for viability," she says. The young Augur woman acting as the mouthpiece seems particularly calm, with none of the brittleness exhibited by any of the ones attempting independent action. "It was necessary. They were becoming fragments."

---

Seregal glances over at his companions and clears his throat, stepping forward, away from the cart. "Excuse me," he says, interrupting in his most charmingly-bumbling voice imaginable. "Uh, we are but simple travelers in search of directions.... That looks like an interesting ceremony." He eyes the gleaming numenera items and longs to know their secrets. Best to see if can acquire them under the guise of righteousness. He stops and starts again and calls out to the kneeling man. "Say, uh, is everything all right?"

Lost in thought for days now, and often given to eying the little intellect/memory boosters she'd bought before leaving, Echo drifts up behind Seregal like a leaf in the wind. She looks at what's happening, but it's hard to say if she sees it or not, at least from her expression.

Seregal and Echo draw closer to the curious arrangement of Augur, human, and manikin of light. This close, the human looks like he's in pain and terrified at the same time. The Augur doesn't bother to respond, his eyes closed, looking very contented. Suddenly the manikin runs up to Echo, tugging on her like a faithful seskii hound.

He is fading, he will be colorless! the soundless voice cries. The Augur looks back at them as the manikin movies, contentment becoming haughty irritation, morphing into something like anger.

[sblock=Previously, at the market]The merchant nods at those two items. "A nice couple of curiosities, those are. The crystal makes a good light if you're exploring a place, though you have to be touching skin for it to work. Good if you're stumbling around at night. The little beastie there... I'm not quite sure what it's supposed to be. Sort of looks like a ravage bear, but cuter and with hair, don't you think? But it's a nice thing to hold, good thing to fall asleep to, even could make a pillow if you like. Ten shins for the crystal, eight for the beastie," he says.[/sblock]

Wisco, a Tough Nano who Lives in the Wilderness.

Back in the Auger Village

"All experiences and memories are shared to achieve completion. All previous segments have had lacks that required concentration for viability," she says. The young Augur woman acting as the mouthpiece seems particularly calm, with none of the brittleness exhibited by any of the ones attempting independent action. "It was necessary. They were becoming fragments."

Wisco leans in against the tree, resting his head against the rough bark. He is not suffering any memory loss. Yet. But there seems little doubt that there is a connection between the Auger's condition the upside down mountain and the machine that eats time. Being able to share the Auger's memories would be useful in the journey ahead through the Auger Khan. And perhaps, maybe, it may give him an insight into what is happening. Which, in turn, lead to a way to help the Augers.

The spokeswoman didn't speak to whether being concentrated would make him, in turn, vulnerable to what the Auger's are suffering. Nor to whether it would in turn help them be more resilient. Wisco shrugs. Maybe they don't know.

"I will be concentrated. Perhaps I can learn something from your memories that will allow me to help you.

"If that is acceptable."

[sblock=OOC]Will make Numenera Check to try and get an understanding of what is happening.
Numenera Trained. Going all out in INT pool spend (see below*) [roll0].

Not sure if Wisco's advancement applies here and now or from when he leaves the village. Will spend 2 INT + 1 EDGE for two step reduction, or 3 INT and 2 Edge for 3 step reduction if its an option. Smoke 'em if you've got 'em.

So far Wisco has spent 4 INT pool so far in the village.[/sblock]

OOC: Sorry for my inexcusable lack of posts, y'all!

No problem.

Antor watches the display of the three and it just doesn't seem right to him. He's not sure if the Augur or the manikin thing are either helping or hurting and he decides it's best if he just gets the human away from both until it can be determined.

OOC: - Antor will run up to the human and attempt to pick him up and move him away from them both. He'll place himself between them shielding the human as he does so.

I'll apply a level of effort for whatever I need to roll.

Echo frowned a little at the strange gleaming homunculus, then addressed the Augur.

"Whatever you're doing, stop it."

Silvery fluid welled up out of her skin and quickly covered her from head to foot, leaving her a quicksilver statue of herself.

"Or be stopped."

Seregal raises his hands and smiles diplomatically. "What my companion means is, well, let's discuss any religious or social issues we may have infringed upon, and let's see if we can sort things out peacefully between everyone here."

Wisco believes that "concentration" will connect him with the Augurs and them with him in a symbiotic relationship. With the tree as a bridging force, he will be able to draw upon their knowledge, but part of his own mind will be used to help stabilize their gaps in memory.

The tree's branches lean down to touch Wisco, pressing against his head, his spine, the center of his chest. One branch dangles something in front of him, what looks like a small sapling. "You are a traveler, a rover, a far-seeker. You will carry us with you, inside you and of you."

The sapling is moved to his back, and the branches grip him firmly. The Augur being used as a mouthpiece puts her hand on his arm, her eyes back to gray for a moment.

"This will feel a little painful at first. Keep calm if you can. It will help."

Then Wisco feels the needle-thin branches actually pushing into his skull, finding the gaps between the plates, delving into his brain. Barely has he realized that intrusion when he feels pressure at his back, at the top of his spine.

"It's taking root. You'll carry us with you now," the mouthpiece says.

Lights explode across his mind's eye, and Wisco can see little rootlets running through his brain, wrapping around his spine to where the little tree has been implanted. With a gasp, he momentarily sees a grove made of light, trees all connected together, impulses running from one to another.

And suddenly, it's over.

The mouthpiece runs her hand over a nearby wall, which shimmers into a mirror-like reflectiveness. A tiny tree has taken root between his shoulder blades, rising up his spine to somewhat shade his head, the branches spreading wide as his shoulders. An experiment twist proves that he doesn't feel particularly burdened or stiff, the tree flexing with him.

But it's a mighty odd sight and sensation.

"We will be there for you when you travel, just as you will be there for us. When you need us, just think, and that which you don't know will come to mind."

Wisco feels a strange drawing sensation as the blue fades from the mouthpiece's eyes, returning them to gray. "That helps, Wisco. Your completion stabilizes us all." She smiles at you, and you know unerringly her name is Damarinda. "You seek the source of our eradication. Be careful."

At the Braided River

Several things happen in quick succession.

Echo frowned a little at the strange gleaming homunculus, then addressed the Augur.

"Whatever you're doing, stop it."

Silvery fluid welled up out of her skin and quickly covered her from head to foot, leaving her a quicksilver statue of herself.

"Or be stopped."

The Augur doesn't let go, doesn't even speak, and the human makes a gasping sound like a death rattle. With a mental shriek, the manikin leaps for Echo (for safety, why does she know that?), the light of it peeling off into a dozen different strands that enter her body through her mechanical ports. Almost audibly, she can suddenly feel doors opening in her mind, and upwelling of memory returning...

Antor watches the display of the three and it just doesn't seem right to him. He's not sure if the Augur or the manikin thing are either helping or hurting and he decides it's best if he just gets the human away from both until it can be determined.

OOC:

Antor darts in, snatching the human away from the Augur. As he pulls the human away, long tendrils of something thread-like and glowing stretch from the Augur's palms to the human's temples, some of them snapping, and the human lets out a moan of pain as the Augur snarls elegantly.

Seregal raises his hands and smiles diplomatically. "What my companion means is, well, let's discuss any religious or social issues we may have infringed upon, and let's see if we can sort things out peacefully between everyone here."

The Augur turns at Seregal's words, his elegant face set in haughty lines of anger. "Tell your bodyguard to release my duracha at once. You have no notion what your interference has done." Despite his sharp words, the Augur keeps his hands down and makes no aggressive movements, just runs his fingers through the few remaining strands emerging from his palm, like plucking the strings of an instrument. The human twitches like he's being jabbed with a needle every time that happens.

The Augur utterly ignores the drama of Echo and the manikin of light, as if he didn't even see them.

Wisco nods in acknowledgement to Damarinda.

"You are welcome. And yes, it seems I do."

Wisco spends the rest of the evening getting used to the idea of what has just happened. It involves quite a bit of rolling his shoulders. After the initial unease, he comes to find the feeling of the roots running through his shoulders reassuring in some way. He is cautious about drawing on the memories now available to him for fear of overstepping the boundaries of what is acceptable. And perhaps of getting overwhelmed somewhat. Besides which, thoughts, many of them random, keep popping into his head interrupting his concentration.

How do you sleep with a tree growing out of your shoulders? This is going to take some explaining. I am going to need to get my cloak modified. I wonder how tall I am now? Is it visible to all or just in the mirror?

The next morning Wisco packs his things and sets off to find his companions.

[sblock=OOC]Um. Wow.

There are probably a whole lot of questions Wisco should ask now, but I can't think of them. Besides, I want to get back to the Braided River.

Is the tree visible to all, or is it just a function of the mirror that he can see it?[/sblock]

The tree, it seems is visible to all, judging by the reactions of those around you when you return to Wislayn. However, you're not the strangest thing they've ever seen. You're not even the strangest thing some of them have seen today. Jastor walked around with a six-foot-tall glowing orb bobbing along behind him every minute of every day.

But it's a bit of a shock to your colleagues.

Questions are asked as you make your way across Augur-Kala, but come to an abrupt halt as you're confronted by the scene at the braided river.
