The "Classic Campaign"

If the emphasis is on the classic-feel early D&D adventures, there is no doubt that B4 is the platonic ideal of the perfect 1E D&D adventure. It's got it all. It's a complete campaign and it's also an absurdly linear dungeon crawl.

I also echo recommendations of B2 as a classic. Another much under-reported great early module for the next phase (perhaps just before A or just after) is I2, Tomb of the Lizard king.

OH, man, I2 is a seriously deadly module. I ran it several times back when it was new and no one ever actually made it to the Tomb. They either got womped at the bridge or when the dragon came out to play. Great adventure, especially for testing player skill, and one that REALLY points out who the weak link in the gaming group is.

Thanks for mentioning that one, I had forgotten about it.

Where do Castle Amber (or was it Amber Mansion?) and The Tomb of Horrors fit in?

I used to love the former, hated the latter.

X2, Castle Amber, another EXCELLENT adventure. I ran that tons of times for D&D and 1E. I still love that adventure and, with a little extra work, you can run a good chunk of a campaign just from that one module.

I never dug on S1 Tomb of Horros either. Nifty idea and interesting traps, but it quickly turns into the "don't touch anything" adventure.

N1, Cult of the Reptile God is pretty good old 1st level adventure as well. I've used that as a start to a couple of campaigns, and tied it into the G-D series before. It is in the same neck of the woods, so to speak, geographically with the G Series.

Thank you for reminding me about N1. It is a superb adventure. Were any sequels ever produced? They would be most entertaining.

Also, someone mentioned S1. It may be the worst D&D adventure of all time. You walked on that tile. Now you must die. No saving throw.

You're not alone Angcuru. Sure sounds like disorganized schizophrenia to me :).

Sheesh. Young'uns. ;)

My vote would be for Keep on the Borderlands or Village of Hommelet, as well.

S1 The Tomb of Horrors

S1 was what it was supposed to be. A gigantic death trap to slaughter adventurers.

There aren't supposed to be any survivors if you play S1.

I can't believe no one has pimped X1, Isle of Dread. It's got enough cheesy King Kong-style jungle adventuring to fill an entire campaign. Not to mention a delightful set of uber-villains in the aboleth.

Definitely check out the Acaeum (linked above) for more on all these old-school modules.
