Saw it yesterday as well. A fun romp, very Guardians of the Galaxy in tone (sarcastic/snarky humor, found family concept, failing forward), but better than Guardians. Doesn't require any D&D knowledge, but almost every scene has multiple references for people who know the game. A lot of the references aren't stated directly; for instance, many of the spells used are obviously specific spells from the game, but are never called out in the movie specifically. I think it hits exactly the right tone for a mass audience to appreciate. The story isn't spectacular (not bad, just pretty lightweight), but the chemistry among the crew (with lynchpin Chris Pine doing most of the heavy lifting, and Hugh Grant doing some great scenery chewing), the humor, and the fast-paced editing keep the movie rolling and never lagging. Overall, it isn't as deep as a great serious D&D campaign can be, but it captures the spirit of a fun campaign where everyone is goofing around and just enjoying themselves. I enjoyed, and would recommend to anyone who thinks what I just wrote sounds like it might be a good time. My wife, who doesn't D&D, also loved it. And she wants to watch it again at home, so I can tell her all the easter eggs and references. She says: For the non-D&D people, this was just a GOOD movie. Enjoyable, funny, action. You don't have to know anything about D&D to enjoy it, just be ready to enjoy some lightweight fantasy action. And if you get to go with a D&D nerd, getting to watch them grin to themselves in glee is an extra bonus. It was just fun! Also, owlbears!
