I have this strange urge to go to GenCon carrying a backpack with a notebook labeled "4e Playtest Notes" peeking out just to see all hijinks that would ensue as people tried to get a peek.

Are you kidding? I wouldn't be surprised to hear "Unnamed man slain in Dungeons and Dragons related theft" plastered on the news at Gencon.

If ya go with the idea that 3.5 was a "minor" upgrade (call it Service Pack 1 if ya want )and 3E came out several years ago...then 4E should be announced at GC and out by '06 or '07 (that would put about 6 or 7 years between 3E and 4E, ignoring the service pack 3.5 release ).

"Minor upgrade"? "Service pack"? Since when have rpgs been computer software? Am I the only one to think that 3.5 was anything but a "minor" upgrade? I tried converting some 3.5 material to 3.0 (because I haven't switched my game to 3.5 yet) and found it so difficult that I eventually gave up. Although the core mechanics are the same, there are a huge amount of differences between the two editions. If not for the official moniker, I would say that 3.5 is really 4e.

So if WotC released a new "edition" (call it a "revision" or "upgrade" if you will, but I find it to essentially be a new edition) after less than 3 years, I honestly expect that 4e will be announced by 2006 (if not earlier).

Well, it wasnt that minor, and perhaps some stuff got changed "just because", but the changes werent really that sweeping were they? Piddly stuff like spells switching levels or whatever. But really I think the biggest change mightve been to the way monsters get feats and skill points. And its pretty easy to "fix" those (esp since monsters now progress in both as characters do).

I have enough 3e stuff that I likely won't buy 4e.

The Half-Orc is underpowered. Half-Elves are underpowered. Bards suck, Clerics are broken, Fighters are boring, Druids are overpowered.

Haste needs to be revised. Shapechange broke my game, threw it in the trash, burned the trashcan, threw the burned trashcan in the ocean, then pissed in the ocean.

We have too many PrC's.

I'm not going either. I probably wouldn't do it either -- at least not anymore. It's the sort of thing I would have done when I was a teenager.

I heard that in 4th Edition they will replace the Bard with the Rapper, the monk with the terrorist, and the Druid will be erased in favour of the Capitalist class.

I can see Capitalist replacing Wizard, but Druid? Maybe a "South Park Hippy" class is in order.

My Hippy3/Capitalist2/Rapper1 with uncommon flaming greatsword and Heward's Beat-Box is gonna SOOOO ROCK!
