The Dark Tower: to Read or Not to Read

I just read the cover of Song of Susannah, and I'm rather dissapointed that King decided to put himself in his own series. That smacks of amateur fanfics, and while he's definately not an amateur, I'm kinda leery about how this'll turn out.
