Originally released for Swords & Wizardry with a primitive layout and some hastily put together maps, The Darkness Beneath Dalentown is now re-born with fully revised text bringing it in line with both BX and 1st edition compatibility, gorgeous full color maps by Elven Tower, and new artwork by a host of artists. Let’s check out some of the enhancements.
New Cartography
After the Swords & Wizardry version of the adventure did so well, and other Dalentown-related releases like Adventures in Dalentown sold well, we’d already had the famous Elven Tower Cartography creating new town maps. It only made sense to have them re-do the entire adventure! Best of all, getting Elven Tower to do this allows us to include player-friendly maps, a separate printable PDF for larger versions of the maps than what are shown inside the book, and again as a zip file containing the highest resolution, so folks using virtual tabletop services like Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, and Astral have access to the best quality!

New Art & Layout
We’ve always wanted to capture both the old school feel of this dungeon crawl, but also get some color art in there. With art from Patrick E. Pullen, Dean Spencer, Jeff Preston, and Rick Hershey, we were able to do that. We’ve laid the book out in a format that’s fairly printer-friendly, too, so it should be easy to print off what you need (or the whole thing)! We also got to load up the monster appendix with pictures, which is always something I like to see!

Revised Text
Last but certainly not least, we fully revised the text. This not only caught a few errors, but allowed us an opportunity to layout the background of the adventure, the motivations and abilities of the antagonists, and the various levels of the dungeon in an easier-to-use format. Game Masters can quickly find what they need, easily alter things they don’t like or add things they do like to the various encounter areas (let’s face it, that’s what most GMs do!), and handle the maps or monsters separately if they just want to use them for their own adventures.
