The Decade's Best D20/OGL

I just had a wicked idea while looking through my copy of Monte Cook Presents: The Year's Best D20...

What if we could get a publisher to create a similar book for the entire decade? A nice fat hardcover with the best of the best from 2000 to 2010!

Who would be interested in such a book? Would it have to be updated to Pathfinder? Or would you buy it just as an OGL book that stays true to the original source?

Am I the only one who would think such a book would be awesome?

Opinions? Thoughts? Suggestions? Threats? ;)

Cheers!

That would be some under taking. First you would need someone like Monte to do it. Or someone with a great amount of knowledge on the game and who has seen a lot of the product published in the past 10 years (Psion would be a good choice). I'd want it as a d20 book and not Pathfinder becasue if you did Pathfinder you would in some way be changing what was selected. It also adds another step in the process of conversion.

Definitely an undertaking. It would probably take a team of knowledgeable folks to find the best of the best, the team of course having broad exposure to material released during the decade. Then as you said, toss a big name at it to boost appeal and gain immediate recognition.

I would lean towards converting to Pathfinder if we are talking best of fantasy d20. I don't think the change to the content selected would be substantial enough to warrant not doing it or destroying the original intention.

While it adds another step in the process, I think already converted material, coupled with being more attractive to current players who might not have lived through the past decade as a d20 player would increase possible sales base. (i.e. I don't think converting the material to Pathfinder would off put a lot of people but might appeal to newer players since no conversion would be necessary).

I don't think there is any way to do a best of d20/OGL and not include Pathfinder which is both d20 and OGL. It would seem pretty arbitrary to leave them out.

Such a book would be interesting but only if it was pretty evenhandedly put together. Actually I think, if they could be persuaded not to make it too much of a commercial for their own products, that the folks at Paizo would be the best group to do it as they are, collectively, probably as knowledgable about the d20 offerings as anyone else.

The issue was not if Pathfinder should be included but to convert the d20 stuff to Pathfinder.

What about just having sidebars or something along the lines of "Using this with Pathfinder"? That seems like a win/win option to me.

I was thinking along those lines too. Have the original material be done as standard OGL material (v.3.5) and have sidebars for using the material with Pathfinder.

Best of both worlds.

Plus, there could be a book done for standard OGL fantasy and a book for d20 Modern.

My mistake, I had misunderstood what such a book would hold. I was thinking of a mere list of the best works, when in fact it would be a compilation of those works.
