The DM always wins... or do they...

Pretty simply, putting any expectation on the players causes great DM FAIL. If I plan an encounter where I introduce a recurring character, they are guaranteed to kill him regardless of his advanced levels, contingency spells, or quickened teleports.

Once they even captured one of the few reoccuring characters that had lived long enough to matter. I planned the session based on what the other baddies would do once they found out the party had killed the captured BBEG. So what did the party do? They set him free on a deserted island.
